He said: It was revealed concerning 'Abdullah ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Sarh al-Qurashi, who had embraced Islam and used to write for the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. When he dictated to him 'All-Hearing, All-Knowing' (Sami'an 'Aliman), he would write: 'All-Knowing, All-Wise' ('Aliman Hakiman). And when he said: 'All-Knowing, All-Wise', he would write: 'All-Hearing, All-Knowing'. Thus, he doubted and disbelieved, saying: If Muhammad is receiving revelation, then I have also received revelation.

His saying: "Or one who says, 'I will reveal the like of what Allah has revealed'"

7627 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd ibn 'Atiyyah informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my uncle narrated to me, my father narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "Or one who says, 'I will reveal the like of what Allah has revealed'", he said: He claimed that if he wished, he could say the like of it, meaning poetry.

7628 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Ahmad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Mukhtar narrated to us, from 'Anbasah, from Jabir, from al-Sha'bi, he said: The one who said: "I will reveal the like of what Allah has revealed" was 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul.

7629 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, he said: Regarding "Or one who says, 'I will reveal the like of what Allah has revealed'", he said: It was revealed concerning 'Abdullah ibn Sa'd ibn Abi al-Sarh al-Qurashi, who used to write for the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He said: If Allah is revealing it, then I have also revealed the like of what Allah has revealed. Muhammad said: "All-Hearing, All-Knowing," and I said: "All-Knowing, All-Wise."

His saying, the Almighty: "And if you could see when the wrongdoers are in the agonies of death"

7630 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "And if you could see when the wrongdoers are in the agonies of death," he said: This is at the time of death.

7631 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Munib narrated to us, Abu Mu'adh al-Nahwi narrated to us, from 'Ubayd ibn Sulayman, from al-Dahhak: Regarding his saying: "In the agonies of death," meaning the throes of death.
