7671 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-'Awfi informed me in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, my paternal uncle narrated to me, my father narrated to me from 'Atiyyah from Ibn 'Abbas: "The Cleaver of the daybreak (al-isbah)," he says: The Creator of the night and the day.

7672 - And it was narrated from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam that he said: He cleaved the daybreak from the night.

The Second Aspect:

7673 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid: "The Cleaver of the daybreak," [meaning] the illumination of the dawn. It was narrated from Qatadah something similar.

7674 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Munib narrated to us, Abu Mu'adh narrated to us from 'Ubayd ibn Sulayman from al-Dahhak: regarding His saying: "The Cleaver of the daybreak," he says: The Creator of the light, the light of the day.

His saying: "And He made the night for rest."

7675 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan ibn Salih narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Bashir narrated to us from Qatadah regarding the saying of Allah: "And He made the night for rest," every bird and creature dwells therein.

7676 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Adhrami narrated to us, Mulabbid ibn Ishaq al-Marwazi narrated to us, Ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us from 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Abi Rawwad, he said: Suhayb had a wife, and he used to stay up late. He said: She said to him, "O Suhayb, you have ruined yourself for me!" Suhayb replied: "Allah has made the night as a rest for Suhayb. If Suhayb remembers Paradise, his longing grows long, and if he remembers the Fire, his sleep flies away."

His saying: "And [He made] the sun and the moon for calculation."

7677 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, narrated to me, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And the sun and the moon for calculation," he means the count of days, months, and years.

7678 - Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And the sun and the moon for calculation," he said: They rotate according to a calculation.
