Volume 4 · Page 309His saying: 'sons and daughters without knowledge'

Translation · EN

7722 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Usamah narrated to us from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak regarding: "And they have fabricated for Him sons and daughters," he said: "They described Him."

7723 - My father narrated to us, Nasr ibn 'Ali narrated to us, my father narrated to us, Khalid ibn Qays narrated to us from Qatadah: regarding His saying: "And they have fabricated for Him sons and daughters," he said: "They lied about Him. As for the Jews and the Christians, they said: 'We are the sons of Allah and His beloved ones,' and they lied in that. As for the polytheists of the Arabs, they used to worship al-Lat and al-'Uzza and would say: 'Al-'Uzza is the daughter of Allah,' so Allah proved them liars and denied them from what they fabricated."

His saying: "sons and daughters without knowledge"

7724 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim informed us in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi: regarding His saying: "And they have fabricated for Him sons and daughters without knowledge," he says: "They cut/assigned for Him sons and daughters. The Arabs said: 'The angels are the daughters of Allah,' and the Jews and the Christians said: 'The Messiah and 'Uzayr are the sons of Allah.'"

7725 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj narrated to us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding His saying: "And they have fabricated for Him sons and daughters without knowledge," he said: "They fabricated, meaning they lied. There were no sons or daughters for Allah. The Christians said: 'The Messiah is the son of Allah,' and the polytheists said: 'The angels are the daughters of Allah,' so all of them fabricated the lie, and 'kharaga' (fabricated) means 'ikhtaraqa' (invented)."

His saying: "Exalted is He"

7726 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Hafs ibn Ghiyath narrated to us from Hajjaj, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from Ibn 'Abbas: regarding His saying: "Subhan Allah" (Exalted is Allah), he said: "Allah's sanctification of Himself from evil." Then 'Umar said to 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both, while his companions were with him: "'La ilaha illa Allah' (There is no god but Allah) - we have already known it, so what is 'Subhan Allah'?" 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said to him: "A word that Allah loved for Himself and was pleased with, and He loved that it be spoken."

7727 - My father narrated to us, Ibn Nufayl narrated to us, al-Nadr ibn Musa narrated to us, he said: A man asked Maymun ibn Mihran about 'Subhan Allah', and he said: "A name with which Allah is glorified, and by which He is declared far removed from evil."

7728 - My father narrated to me, Sahl ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, Abu Malik - meaning 'Amr ibn Hashim al-Janbi - narrated to us from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "Subhanahu" (Exalted is He), he says: "Wonder."
