to the share of the shaytan. And if the irrigation water they assigned to Allah overflowed into the share of the shaytan, they would leave it; and if the irrigation water they assigned to the shaytan overflowed into the share of Allah, they would divert it. This is what was assigned to Allah from the crops and irrigation water [1].

His saying: "And livestock, a share."

7912 - And with the same chain, from Ibn 'Abbas: His saying: "And livestock, a share." As for what they assigned to the shaytan, it is the saying of Allah the Exalted and Majestic: "Allah has not appointed [such innovations as] bahirah, sa'ibah, wasilah, or ham [2]."

His saying: "And they said, 'This is for Allah,' by their claim, 'and this is for our partners.'"

7913 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father narrated to me, from my uncle, from his father, from 'Atiyyah, from Ibn 'Abbas: His saying: "And they assigned to Allah from that which He created of crops and livestock a share, and they said, 'This is for Allah,' by their claim, 'and this is for our partners'"—the verse. This is because the enemies of Allah, when they farmed a crop or had fruit, they would assign a portion of it to Allah and a portion to the idol. If anything from the crop, fruit, or something from the share of the idols fell into what was named for the Almighty, they would return it to what they had assigned to the idol. If the water they assigned to the idol preceded them and watered something they had assigned to Allah, they would assign it to the idol. And if something from the crops and fruit that they had assigned to Allah fell and mixed with what they had assigned to the idol, they would say, "This is poor," and they would not return it to what they had assigned to Allah. And if the water they had named for Allah preceded them and watered what they had named for the idol, they would leave it for the idol [3]. They used to prohibit from their livestock the bahirah, the sa'ibah, the wasilah, and the ham, and they would assign them to the idols and claim that they were prohibiting them for Allah. So Allah the Exalted said regarding that: "And they assigned to Allah from that which He created of crops and livestock a share, and they said, 'This is for Allah,' by their claim, 'and this is for our partners.'"

His saying, the Exalted: "Then what was for their partners did not reach Allah, but what was for Allah did reach their partners."

7914 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' [narrated to us], from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: His saying: "Then what was for their partners did not reach Allah, but what was for Allah did reach their partners."
