Zayd ibn Salam, that he heard Abu Salam; Abu Umamah al-Bahili narrated to me that a man said: "O Messenger of Allah, how many were the messengers?" He said: "Three hundred and fifteen."

His saying, the Almighty: "And wish to make a division between Allah and His messengers."

[6178] Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi narrated to us, Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "And wish to make a division between Allah and His messengers," he says: "They say: Muhammad is not a messenger of Allah, and the Jews say: 'Isa (Jesus) is not a messenger of Allah; thus they have made a division between Allah and His messengers."

His saying, the Almighty: "And say, 'We believe in some and disbelieve in some.'"

[6179] My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, Yazid ibn Zuray' reported, from Sa'id, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And say, 'We believe in some and disbelieve in some.' Those are the enemies of Allah, the Jews and the Christians. The Jews believed in the Torah and Musa (Moses), and disbelieved in the Gospel and 'Isa. The Christians believed in the Gospel and Musa, and disbelieved in the Furqan (the Criterion/Quran) and Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace."

His saying, the Almighty: "And wish to adopt a way in between."

[6180] And by way of him, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And wish to adopt a way in between," he says: "They adopted Judaism and Christianity, and they are both innovations (bid'atayn) which are not from Allah, and they abandoned Islam."

His saying, the Almighty: "Those are the disbelievers, truly."

[6181] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding the saying: "Those are the disbelievers, truly"; [he said]: "Allah has made the believer a believer in truth, and the disbeliever a disbeliever in truth."

[6182] 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Bishr ibn al-Hakam al-Naysaburi informed us in what he wrote to me, Musa ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Qinbari narrated to us, al-Hakam ibn Aban narrated to us, 'Uthman ibn Hadir narrated to me, Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to me, he said: Ibn Hadir said to me: "Do you know who the disbeliever is? Indeed, Allah the Almighty says: 'Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers and wish to make a division between Allah and His messengers and say, "We believe in some and disbelieve in some," and wish to adopt a way in between—those are the disbelievers, truly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.'"
