His saying, the Almighty: "Then the thunderbolt overtook them."

[6191] My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dashtaki narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far al-Razi narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas regarding His saying: "Then the thunderbolt overtook them," he said: "They are the seventy [men] whom Musa chose, so they set out with him. He said: They heard a speech and were struck by the thunderbolt, meaning: they died."

His saying, the Almighty: "...the thunderbolt for their wrongdoing."

[The First Interpretation]

[6192] My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Sadaqah 'Isa ibn Yunus al-Ramli narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb—meaning Ibn Shabur—narrated to us, he said: I heard 'Urwah ibn Ruwaym saying: The Children of Israel asked Musa—meaning—to show them Allah openly, so he informed them that they would not be able to bear that. They refused, and they persisted before Allah, so some of them were struck by the thunderbolt while others were looking on. Then those [who had been struck] were resurrected, and those [others] were struck by the thunderbolt. The wording belongs to Muhammad. In the hadith of 'Isa ibn Yunus: "Then those who were struck by the thunderbolt were resurrected, or the others were struck, then they were resurrected." Then Allah, the Almighty, said: "Then the thunderbolt overtook them."

And the Second Interpretation:

[6193] Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad ibn Talhah narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "Openly... then the thunderbolt overtook you," and the thunderbolt is: fire.

[6194] Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, from Ma'mar, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Then the thunderbolt overtook them," he said: "The thunderbolt overtook them, meaning: they died."

His saying, the Almighty: "Then you took the calf [for worship] after the clear signs had come to you."

[6195] 'Isam ibn Dawud narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, he said: Abu al-'Aliyah said: "It was only called 'the calf' (al-'ijl) because they hastened ('ajjalu) and took it before it came to them."

[6196] Al-Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "The calf"; [it is] the young of the bovine: the offspring of the cow."

His saying, the Almighty: "Then We pardoned you after that."

[6197] 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far al-Razi narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "Then We pardoned you," meaning: after they had taken the calf. Something similar has been narrated from al-Rabi' ibn Anas."
