Volume 4 · Page 56His saying, the Exalted: 'And their saying, "Our hearts are wrapped."'

Translation · EN

His saying, the Almighty: "And their saying: Our hearts are wrapped."

[6218] Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us, Asbat ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Muslim al-Batin, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: "The heart (qalb) was only named so because of its turning (taqallubihi)."

[His saying, the Almighty: Our hearts are wrapped.]

[The First View]

[6219] Abu Zur'ah Minjab ibn al-Harith narrated to us, Bishr informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Our hearts," he said: "They said: Our hearts are filled with knowledge, we do not need the knowledge of Muhammad nor anyone else."

[6220] Muhammad ibn 'Ammar narrated to us, he said: We read to Yahya ibn al-Durays, from Fudayl ibn Marzuq, from 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi regarding: "Our hearts are wrapped," he said: "Our hearts are vessels for knowledge."

It was narrated from 'Ata' al-Khurasani the like of it.

[The Second View]

[6221] My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding: "And they said our hearts are wrapped," he said: "In a covering."

It was narrated from Mujahid, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, 'Ikrimah, al-Suddi, and Qatadah in a report from Ma'mar the like of that.

[The Third View]

[6222] My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-'Arzami narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from my grandfather, from Qatadah, from al-Hasan regarding His saying: "Our hearts are wrapped," he said: "Uncircumcised."

[The Fourth View]

[6223] 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "Our hearts are wrapped," meaning: "They do not understand." It was narrated from Qatadah in a report of Ibn Abi 'Arubah from him the like of it.

[The Fifth View]

[6224] Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from Fudayl, from 'Atiyyah regarding: "Our hearts are wrapped," he said: "Vessels for evil."
