His saying, the Almighty: "And [We sent] messengers about whom We have not related to you."

[6284] 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, 'Abd al-Wahhab al-Sayrafi narrated to us in Basra, Muslim ibn Qutaybah narrated to us from Isra'il, from Jabir, from 'Abd Allah ibn Naji, from 'Ali, regarding His saying: "And [We sent] messengers about whom We have not related to you"—he said: "Allah sent a prophet who was an Abyssinian slave; he is among those whom He did not relate to Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace."

[6285] Al-Husayn ibn al-Sakan al-Basri narrated to us, Abu Zayd—meaning the grammarian—narrated to us, Qays narrated to us, from Jabir, from 'Abd Allah ibn Naji, from 'Ali, regarding His saying: "And [We sent] messengers about whom We have related to you before and messengers about whom We have not related to you"—he said: "A prophet was sent from the Abyssinians; he is among those whom He did not relate to Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace."

His saying, the Almighty: "And Allah spoke to Moses with [direct] speech."

[6286] My father narrated to us, 'Amr ibn al-Salt narrated to us, 'Ali ibn 'Asim narrated to us, from al-Fadl ibn 'Isa al-Raqashi, Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir narrated to me, from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah who said: "When Allah the Almighty spoke to Moses on the day of the Mount [Sinai], He spoke to him with a speech other than the speech with which He spoke to him on the day He called him. So Moses said to Him: 'O Lord, is this Your speech with which You spoke to me?' He said: 'No, O Moses. I have only spoken to you with the power of ten thousand tongues, and I possess the power of all tongues, and I am more powerful than that.' When Moses returned to the Children of Israel, they said: 'O Moses, describe to us the speech of the Most Merciful.' He said: 'I cannot.' They said: 'Then give us a likeness.' He said: 'Have you not seen the sound of thunderbolts? It is near to it, yet it is not it.'"

[6287] Ahmad ibn Mansur ibn Bashshar al-Ramadi narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Bakr ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith, from Jaz' ibn Jabir al-Khath'ami, from Ka'b who said: "When Allah the Almighty spoke to Moses, it was with all tongues other than His [own] speech. So Moses said to Him: 'O Lord, is this Your speech?' He said: 'No, and if I were to speak to you with My speech, you would not be able to sustain it.' He said: 'O Lord, is there anything among Your creation that resembles Your speech?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'And the most similar of My creation to My speech is the strongest of what you hear of thunderbolts.'"

His saying, the Almighty: "With [direct] speech."
