His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, We sent down the Torah"
[6399] My father narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Raja' narrated to us, 'Imran Abu al-'Awwam al-Qattan narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Abu al-Malih, from Wa'ilah, that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "The Torah was sent down with six [days] remaining of Ramadan."
His saying, the Almighty: "in which is guidance and light"
[6400] I read to Muhammad: Muhammad ibn Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil, regarding "in which is guidance and light"—meaning: guidance from misguidance, and light—meaning: light from blindness.
His saying, the Almighty: "The prophets who submitted [to Allah] judge by it"
[6401] al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, who said: A man from Muzaynah narrated to us—while we were with Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib—from Abu Hurayrah, who said: A man from among the Jews committed adultery with a woman. So some of them said: "O Abu al-Qasim, what do you say about a man and a woman from among them who have committed adultery?"
The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "I shall judge according to what is in the Torah." So he ordered them both, and they were stoned.
al-Zuhri said: And it reached us that this verse was revealed concerning them: "Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which is guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allah] judge by it," and the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was one of them.
[6402] I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl: Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "The prophets who submitted [to Allah] judge by it"—[meaning] they judge by what is in the Torah from the time of Musa to the time of 'Isa.
His saying, the Almighty: "who submitted [to Allah]"
[6403] Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim informed us in what he wrote to me: Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "The prophets who submitted [to Allah] judge by it"—he said: Those who submitted along with the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).
His saying, the Almighty: "for those who are Jews"
[6404] Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us in what he wrote to me: Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, regarding "for those who are Jews"—they were the two sons of Isriya; they followed the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) but did not submit [to Islam], and they had given him a covenant that he would not ask them about anything from the Torah without them informing him about it.
