Noah was, according to what scholars mention, patient and forbearing; no prophet encountered more trials from his people than he did, except for a prophet who was killed.

8627 - Muhammad ibn Yahya told us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl told us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: In what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad told me, from 'Ikrimah, or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "Worship"—that is, affirm the oneness of (tawhid).

8628 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Minjab told us, Bishr informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "Punishment" (adhab)—he says: Retribution (nakal).
His saying, the Almighty: "The eminent among his people said: Indeed, we see you..."
8629 - Abu Bakr ibn Abi Musa told us, Harun ibn Hatim told us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hammad told us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik regarding his saying: "The eminent"—meaning the nobles of his people.
His saying, the Almighty: "He said: O my people, there is no error in me."
8630 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, told me, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah told us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl told us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq told me, from one who is not accused, from 'Ubayd ibn 'Umayr al-Laythi, that he used to narrate that it reached him that they would assault him—meaning Noah—and strangle him until he would lose consciousness. When he recovered, he would say: "O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know." This continued until they persisted in disobedience, sin became great among them upon the earth, the situation became protracted for him and for them, and the affliction from them intensified upon him.
نُوحٌ فِيمَا يَذْكُرُ أَهْلُ الْعِلْمِ حَلِيمًا صَبُورًا لَمْ يَلْقَ نَبِيُّ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ مِنَ الْبَلايَا أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا لَقِيَ إِلا نَبِيُّ قُتِلَ.

٨٦٢٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقُرَشِيُّ، ثنا عَبَّادُ بْنُ كُلَيْبٍ أَبُو غَسَّانَ اللَّيْثِيُّ، ثنا مُسْلِمُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْعَبَّادَانِيُّ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ الرَّقَاشِيِّ قَالَ: إِنَّمَا سُمِّيَ نُوحٌ لِطُولِ مَا نَاحَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: فَقَالَ يَا قَوْمِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ إِلَهٍ غَيْرُه
٨٦٢٧ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى أَنْبَأَ أَبُو غَسَّانَ، ثنا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: فِيمَا حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، أَوْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَوْلَهُ: اعْبُدُوا أَيْ وَحِّدُوا.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

٨٦٣٠ - حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ مَنَ لَا يُتَّهَمْ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُحَدِّثُ أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يَبْطِشُونَ بِهِ يَعْنِي نُوحًا فَيَخْنِقُونَهُ حَتَّى يَغْشَى عَلَيْهِ، فَإِذَا أَفَاقَ قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِقَوْمِي فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ حَتَّى إِذَا تَمَادَوْا فِي الْمَعْصِيَةَ، وَعَظُمَتْ فِيهِمْ فِي الأَرْضِ الْخَطِيئَةُ، وَتَطَاوَلَ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَيْهِمُ الشَّأْنُ، وَاشْتَدَّ عَلَيْهِ مِنْهُمُ
