Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 5 · Page 113His saying (exalted is He): 'And We drowned those who denied Our signs'

Translation · EN

He said: There were eighty men with Noah in the ship, one of whom was Jurhum, and his language was Arabic.

8637 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas told us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah told us, Salamah told us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq told me, from al-Hasan ibn Dinar, from 'Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud'an, from Yusuf ibn Mihran, from 'Abd Allah ibn al-'Abbas, who said: I heard him say: The first of the beasts that Noah loaded into the ship was the pair (the male and female), and the last was the donkey. When the donkey entered, its chest entered, but Iblis clung to its tail, so its legs could not enter. Noah began saying: "Woe to you, enter!" It would try to get up but could not, until Noah said: "Woe to you, enter, even if the devil is with you,"—a word that slipped from his tongue.

His saying, the Almighty: "And We drowned those who rejected Our signs."

8638 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas told us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah told us, Abu Zuhayr told us, from a man among his companions, who said: It has reached me that the people of Noah lived through that flood for forty days.

8639 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas told me, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah told us, Salamah told us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq told me, who said: The earth and what was upon it were drowned, and the water reached the limit to which it was intended to reach, and the water did not exceed its limit. The duration of the water when He sent it was one hundred and fifty days, as the people of the Torah claim. The time between Allah sending the flood and the water receding was six months and ten nights. When Allah willed to cease that, He sent a wind over the face of the water, and the water calmed, and the springs of the great deep and the gates of the sky tightened, and the water began to diminish, recede, and retreat. The settling of the ship on Al-Judi was, as the people of the Torah claim, in the seventh month, on the seventeenth night that had passed from it. On the first day of the tenth month, he saw the tops of the mountains. When forty days had passed after that, Noah, peace and blessings be upon him, opened the hatch of the ship that he had made in it. He then sent out the raven to see for him what the water had done, but it did not return to him. Then he sent out the dove, and it returned to him, for it did not find a place for its foot, so he stretched out his hand for the dove, took it, and brought it inside. He waited for seven days, then he sent it out to see for him, and it returned to him at eventide with an olive leaf in its beak, so Noah knew that the water had decreased from the surface of the earth. Then he waited for seven days, then he sent it out, and it did not return to him, so Noah knew that the earth had emerged.

His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, they were a blind people."

8640 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Indeed, they were a blind people," he said: Disbelievers.
