8664 - Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman ibn Hakim informed me in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi regarding His saying: "And to Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih," he said: Allah sent Salih to Thamud, and he called them [to the truth], but they denied him. So he said to them what Allah mentioned in the Qur'an.
8665 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas told us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah told us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl told us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq who said: When Allah destroyed ‘Ad and its matter came to an end, Thamud populated the land after them, so they were made successors on the earth. They grew prosperous in it and spread out, then they grew arrogant against Allah. When their corruption became apparent and they worshipped other than Allah, Allah sent Salih to them as a Messenger, and he was the most moderate of them in lineage and the most superior of them in status. Their dwellings were from al-Hijr to Quzah, which is Wadi al-Qura, and between that was eighteen miles, located between the Hijaz and the Levant. So Allah sent to them a young man, and he called them to Allah until he turned gray and aged, yet no one followed him from among them except a few who were oppressed.
His saying, the Almighty: "There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. This is the she-camel of Allah [as] a sign to you."
8666 - Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani informed me in what he wrote to me, ‘Abd al-Razzaq reported to us, Isra'il reported to us, from ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Rufay‘, from Abu al-Tufayl who said: Thamud said to Salih: "Bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." He said: So Salih said to them, "Go out to a plateau of the land." So they went out, and behold, it began to heave as a pregnant woman heaves. Then it opened up, and the she-camel emerged from the midst of it. So Salih said to them: "This is the she-camel of Allah [as] a sign to you, so leave her to eat on the land of Allah."
To His saying: "A painful punishment... She has a drink, and you have a drink of a known day."
8667 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas told us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah told us, Salamah told us: Muhammad ibn Ishaq told me, from Ya‘qub ibn ‘Utbah ibn al-Mughirah, that he recounted that they looked at the plateau when Salih called upon Allah with what he called upon Him, and it heaved with the she-camel as a pregnant animal heaves with its offspring. The plateau moved, then it shook and split open, revealing a she-camel as they had described, hollow and white, pregnant, with a size between her flanks that no one knows but Allah.
His saying, the Almighty: "So leave her to eat on the land of Allah and do not touch her with harm."
8668 - Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman informed me in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi regarding "So leave her to eat on the land of Allah," he said: So they asked—meaning Salih—that he bring them a sign.
