Volume 5 · Page 11The second aspect

Translation · EN

And that which He remained silent about is pardoned by Him. Then he recited this verse: "Say, 'I do not find within that which was revealed to me a forbidden...' the verse.

8001 - The Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' told us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us, from Ibn Tawus, from his father, regarding His saying: "Say, 'I do not find within that which was revealed to me a forbidden...'" He said: The people of the Jahiliyyah used to declare things lawful and declare things forbidden. So He said: "Say, 'I do not find within that which was revealed to me...' anything of what you used to declare lawful except this," meaning: except if it be carrion, or blood poured out, or the flesh of swine.

[The Second Aspect]

8002 - My father told us, Rabi' ibn Yahya told us, Asbat told us, from 'Amr ibn Murrah, he said: I heard Jabir ibn Zayd say: I asked the Sea—meaning Ibn 'Abbas—regarding a man who slaughtered and forgot to mention the name of Allah. He recited this verse: "Say, 'I do not find within that which was revealed to me a forbidden...'"

[The Third Aspect]

8003 - My father told us, Musaddad told us, Abu 'Awanah and Abu al-Ahwas both told us, saying: Simak told us, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: A ewe died belonging to Umm al-Aswad, and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was informed. He said: "Why did you not make use of its hide?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is the hide of carrion!" So the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, recited: "Say, 'I do not find within that which was revealed to me a forbidden...'" upon a consumer who consumes it. So it was skinned. Ibn 'Abbas said: They made its hide into a water skin, and I saw it afterwards as an old, worn-out skin.

His saying, Exalted is He: "Upon a consumer who consumes it"

8004 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Muhammad ibn Abi Hammad told us, Zafir told us, from Abu Bakr al-Hudhali, from al-Hasan, he said: Were it not for the hadith of al-Zuhri, we would not wear your furs nor your leather socks until we knew whether they were properly slaughtered or not. Abu Bakr said: Al-Zuhri mentioned a hadith regarding it and said: 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Utaybah told me, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Say, 'I do not find within that which was revealed to me a forbidden...'" upon a consumer who consumes it, the verse. He said: A consumer is one who consumes food. As for the tanned skin, hair, teeth, and nails from carrion, they are not eaten.
