8675 - Abu Bakr ibn Abi Musa al-Ansari told us, Harun ibn Hatim told us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hammad told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi, from Abu Malik regarding His saying: "And do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption," he means: Do not walk [about] in [acts of] disobedience.
His saying, the Almighty: "The eminent among those who were arrogant from his people said."
8676 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, told us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah said: Salamah told us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ishaq told me, saying: Mukhda‘ ibn ‘Amr and those of his clan who were with him among the Azd believed in him. The nobles of Thamud wanted to believe and accept him as truthful, but Dhu’ab ibn ‘Amr ibn Labid, al-Hubab, the keeper of their idols, and Rabab ibn Zama‘ ibn Jalhas—who was their soothsayer—forbade them. They were among the nobles of Thamud, and they turned back Thamud and its nobles from Islam and from entering into the mercy and salvation to which Salih had invited them. Janda‘ had a cousin named Shihab ibn Khalifah ibn Makhla’ ibn al-Walid ibn Jawwas, and he wanted to embrace Islam, but that group forbade him from doing so, and he obeyed them, for he was among the nobles and elite of Thamud.
His saying, the Almighty: "Said those who were arrogant, 'Indeed...'
An explanation of His saying: "But they hamstrung the she-camel."
8677 - Harun ibn Ishaq al-Hamdani told us, ‘Abdah—meaning Ibn Sulayman al-Kilabi—told us, from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Zam‘ah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) one day mentioning the she-camel and the one who hamstrung her. He said: "When the most wicked of them was sent forth," there was sent forth for her a fierce, powerful, and protected man among his clan, like Abu Zam‘ah.
8678 - My father told us, Hisham ibn ‘Ammar told us, al-Walid told us, Khulayd ibn Da‘laj told us, from Qatadah, that when the Thamud hamstrung the she-camel, they began to wink at one another and said: "The young camel is for you." So the young camel ascended the Qarah—a mountain—until, when it was a [certain] day, it faced the Qiblah and said: "O my Lord, my mother! O my Lord, my mother! O my Lord, my mother!" Then the blast was sent upon them at that moment.
8679 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, told us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah told us, Salamah told us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: They went out and lay in wait for the she-camel until she departed from the water, and Qidar had hidden for her at the base of the rock on her path, and Misda‘ had hidden for her at the base of another.
