He said: When they drew near, he struck their eyes, so they went away blind, stumbling over one another, until they reached those who were at the door, and they said: "We have come to you from the most bewitching of people; our sight has been struck." He said:

They went off, stumbling over one another, until they entered the city. It was in the middle of the night when it was raised until they could hear the sound of the birds in the atmosphere of the sky, then it was overturned upon them. Whoever was struck by the overthrow (al-mu'tafikah) was destroyed by it. He said: And whoever escaped from it, a stone followed him wherever he was and killed him. He said: Lot left it with his daughters, and they were three. When he reached a place in the Levant (al-Sham), the eldest died, so he buried her, and a spring emerged by her, which is called the Spring of al-Rabbah. He said: I heard Ibn ‘Abbas say: Rabathan. He said: Then he traveled on until he reached another place, where the youngest died, and he buried her, and a spring emerged by her, which is called al-Zaghriyyah. He said: I heard Ibn ‘Abbas say: Ragharthan. He said: And none remained except the middle one.

His saying, the Almighty: "Was of those who remained behind."

8703 - My father told us, Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la told us, Muhammad ibn Thawr told us, from Ma‘mar, from Qatadah, regarding "those who remained behind (al-ghabirin)," he said: Among those who remained in the punishment of Allah.

His saying, the Almighty: "And We rained upon them a rain. So see how was the end of the criminals."

8704 - Abu ‘Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani informed us, in what he wrote to me, Ibn ‘Abd al-Karim told us, ‘Abd al-Samad ibn Ma‘qil told me, from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said: Michael, who is the one in charge of the punishment, inserted his wing until it reached the lowest part of the earth, then he lifted their towns and overturned them upon them. Stones from the sky descended, pursuing those of them who were not in the town, wherever they were. Thus, Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, destroyed them, while Lot and his family were saved, except his wife.

His saying, the Almighty: "And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu‘ayb."

8705 - Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman ibn Hakim informed us, in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi, regarding "And to Madyan their brother Shu‘ayb," he said: Allah, blessed and exalted be He, sent Shu‘ayb to Madyan, and to the companions of al-Aykah (the Thicket). And al-Aykah is the dense grove of trees.

His saying, the Almighty: "There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord, so fulfill [the measure]."

8706 - And by the same chain, from al-Suddi, who said: Allah sent Shu‘ayb to Madyan, and along with their disbelief, they used to diminish the measure and the weight. So he called them, but they denied him, and he said to them what Allah mentioned in the Qur’an. And they did not respond to him, and when they persisted and denied, they asked him for the punishment.
