The second interpretation:
8871 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, 'Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah told us, Jarir told us, from Ya'qub, from Ja'far, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "So Allah sent upon them the lice [al-qummal]:" It is this weevil which comes out of wheat. A man would take out ten measures (ajribah) of wheat to the mill but would not bring back from it [even] three measures (aqfizah). They said: "O Musa, pray to your Lord for us to lift this lice from us, and we will send the Children of Israel with you." He prayed to his Lord and He lifted them from them, but they refused to send the Children of Israel with him.
The third interpretation:
8872 - My father told us, Muslim ibn Ibrahim told us, 'Abd al-Warith told us, 'Amir al-Ahwal told us, and he said: Al-Hasan said: It is the lice [al-qummal], meaning His saying: "The lice." It was narrated from Zayd ibn Aslam the same thing.
[The fourth interpretation:]
8873 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Hisinjani told us, Sa'id ibn al-Hakam ibn Abi Maryam told us, Mufaddal told us, Abu Sakhr told me that he said: The lice [al-qummal] are the locusts that fly.
It was narrated from 'Ikrimah that he said: The lice are the daughters (nymphs) of the locusts.
The fifth interpretation:
8874 - 'Amr ibn Thawr al-Qaysari informed us in what he wrote to me, al-Firyabi told us, Qays ibn al-Rabi' told us, from Sa'id ibn Masruq, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, he said: The lice are the beetles [al-ji'lan].
The sixth interpretation:
8875 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj told us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding the saying of Allah: "So We sent upon them the flood, the locusts, the lice, and the frogs:" He said: Some people claimed regarding the lice that they are fleas.
His saying, the Almighty: "The frogs"
8876 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, 'Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah told us, Malik ibn Isma'il told us, Ya'qub told us, from Ja'far, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: While Musa, peace be upon him,

٨٨٧١ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثنا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ، عَنْ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: فَأَرْسَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُمَّلَ: وَهُوَ هَذَا السُّوسُ الَّذِي يَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْحِنْطَةِ، فَكَانَ الرَّجُلُ يَخْرُجُ بِالْحِنْطَةِ عَشْرَةَ أَجْرِبَةٍ إِلَى الرَّحَى فَلا يَرُدُّ مِنْهَا بِثَلاثَةِ أَقْفِزَةٍ قَالُوا يَا مُوسَى: ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يَكْشِفُ عَنَّا هَذَا الْقُمَّلَ، فَنُرْسِلُ مَعَكَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ، فَدَعَا ربك، فَكَشَفَ عَنْهُمْ فَأَبَوْا أَنْ يُرْسِلُوا مَعَهُ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ.
وَالْوَجْهُ الثَّالِثُ:
٨٨٧٢ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ، ثنا عَامِرٌ الأَحْوَلُ قَالَ وَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ: هُوَ الْقُمَّلُ يَعْنِي قول: الْقُمَّلَ وَرُوِيَ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ.

٨٨٧٣ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْهِسِنْجَانِيُّ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، ثنا مُفَضَّلٌ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو صَخْرٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: الْقُمَّلُ: الْجَرَادُ الَّذِي يَطِيرُ.
وَرُوِيَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: الْقُمَّلُ بَنَاتُ الْجَرَادِ.
الْوَجْهُ الْخَامِسُ:
٨٨٧٤ - أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ ثَوْرٍ الْقَيْسَارِيُّ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ، ثنا الْفِرْيَابِيُّ، ثنا قَيْسُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ قَالَ: الْقُمَّلُ الْجِعْلانُ.
وَالْوَجْهُ السَّادِسُ:
٨٨٧٥ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ، ثنا أَصْبَغُ بْنُ الْفَرَجِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ يَقُولُ: فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ: فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ الطُّوفَانَ وَالْجَرَادَ وَالْقُمَّلَ وَالضَّفَادِعَ قَالَ: زَعَمَ بَعْضُ النَّاسِ فِي الْقُمَّلِ أَنَّهَا الْبَرَاغِيثُ.
