peace be upon him, was sitting with Pharaoh when he heard the croaking of a frog from a river. He said: "O Pharaoh, what you and your people are suffering from this frog!" He replied: "What could this frog possibly do?" Before evening came, a man would be sitting up to his chin in frogs. None of them could speak without a frog jumping into his mouth, and there was no vessel of theirs that was not filled with frogs. Pharaoh said: "Pray to your Lord for us to lift these frogs from us, and we will believe in you and send the Children of Israel with you." He said: So he prayed to his Lord, and He lifted the frogs from them.

8877 - My father told us, 'Abd Allah ibn 'Imran ibn 'Ali al-Asadi told us, Abu Dawud told us, Zam'ah ibn Salih told us, from Salamah ibn Wahram, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Nothing was more severe upon the family of Pharaoh than the frogs. They would come to the cooking pots while they were boiling with meat and throw themselves into them. Allah rewarded them [the frogs] with the coldness of water and the earth until the Day of Resurrection.

8878 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn Hamzah told us, 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told me, from his father, from Yazid al-Nahwi, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: The frogs were wild, but when Allah sent them upon the family of Pharaoh, they heard and obeyed. They began to cast themselves into the pot while it was boiling and into the ovens while they were hot. Allah, the Almighty, rewarded them for their good obedience with the coldness of water.

8879 - Ahmad ibn Mansur al-Marwazi told us, al-Nadr told us, Isra'il informed us, Jabir ibn Zayd informed us, from 'Ikrimah, he said: 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr said: Do not kill frogs, for when they were sent upon the Children of Israel [the family of Pharaoh], one of the frogs went and fell into an oven containing fire, seeking by that the pleasure of Allah. So Allah replaced them with the coldest thing you know—water—and He made their croaking a form of glorification (Tasbih).

[The first interpretation]

8880 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, 'Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah told us, Malik ibn Isma'il told us, Ya'qub told us, from Ja'far, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "So Allah sent upon them the blood." Their rivers became blood, and their wells became blood. They complained about that to Pharaoh and the severity of the blood they were experiencing. He said: "Woe to you, he has bewitched you." They said: "We do not find any of our water in
