8899 - Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Abu al-Tahir told us, Ibn Wahb informed us, from Musa ibn Ali, from his father, who said: The Children of Israel were in the quarter of the family of Pharaoh, and Pharaoh ruled over them for four hundred and forty years. Then Allah multiplied that for the Children of Israel, and He placed them in authority for eight hundred and eighty years. He said: A man would live for a thousand years in the early generations, and he would not reach puberty until he was one hundred and twenty years old.

His saying, the Almighty: "They were constructing"

8900 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "They were constructing," he said: You build.

8901 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah told us, Shababah told us, Warqa' told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "They were constructing," [meaning]: Building houses and dwellings as much as they reached. Their grapes were not yet trained on trellises.

His saying, the Almighty: "And We took the Children of Israel across the sea"

8902 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid told us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan and Yazid ibn Harun told us (the wording is Muhammad's), from Asbagh ibn Zayd al-Warraq, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, Sa'id ibn Jubayr told me, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: He was driven toward the sea, and it had a crashing sound out of fear that Moses—peace be upon him—would strike it with his staff while he (the sea) was unaware, so it would become a captive to him. When the two groups saw each other and drew near, the people of Moses said: "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!" [Moses replied:] "Do what your Lord has commanded you, for you have not lied and have not been lied to." He said: He promised me that when I reached the sea, it would split for me until I crossed it. Then, after that, he mentioned the staff. He struck the sea with the staff when the vanguard of Pharaoh's army drew near to the rearguard of Moses' army. The sea split just as Allah had commanded and just as He had promised Moses—peace be upon him. When all of Moses' companions had crossed, Pharaoh's companions entered, and the sea closed in upon them as He had commanded.

His saying, the Almighty: "The sea"

8903 - My father told us, Ali ibn al-Tanafisi told us, Waki' told us, from Sufyan, he said: It has reached me that the sea comes out of a water skin.
