His saying, the Exalted: "He said, 'My Lord, show me, that I may look at You.'"
8931 - My father told us, Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "He said, 'My Lord, show me, that I may look at You,'" he says: "Grant me [that vision]."
His saying, the Exalted: "You will not see Me."
8932 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, Bishr ibn 'Umarah reported to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Moses said to his Lord: "My Lord, show me, that I may look at You." Allah said: "O Moses, you will not see Me," meaning: You shall not see Me; that will never be. "Indeed, O Moses, no one sees Me and lives." He said: So Moses said: "My Lord, that I see You and die is dearer to me than that I do not see You and live."
His saying, the Exalted: "But look at the mountain."
8933 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Minjab told us, Bishr reported to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "He said, 'My Lord, show me, that I may look at You,'" so Allah said to Moses: "O Moses, look at the great, tall, and firm mountain; if it remains in its place, then you shall see Me."
His saying, the Exalted: "If it remains in its place."
8934 - And by the same chain, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "If it remains in its place," he says: If it stands firm in its place, unshaken and does not crumble from some of what has descended upon it of My majesty, then you shall see Me.
His saying, the Exalted: "Then you shall see Me."
8935 - And by the same chain, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Then you shall see Me," [meaning] while you are in your weakness and humility, and the mountain crumbled and fell down with its strength, firmness, and greatness; so you are weaker and more humble.
His saying, the Exalted: "But when his Lord appeared to the mountain."
8936 - Ahmad ibn Sinan told us, Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh told us, Hammad ibn Salamah told us, from Thabit al-Bunani, from Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: "But when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He said: 'Like this,' and Mu'adh showed us with the tip of his little finger."
(1). Al-Tirmidhi, Book of Tafsir, No. 3074, he said: A hasan hadith, 5/284 (with the wording: "And Sulayman held his thumb with the tip of his finger").
