throughout that. He said: "This is a handful from the trace of the Messenger who led you across the sea, and I will not cast it for any purpose unless you pray to Allah when I cast it that it may be what I desire." He said: "Then cast it." Aaron prayed for him, and he said: "I desire it to be a calf." Then, whatever belongings, copper, ornaments, or iron were in the pit gathered together, and it became a hollow calf that had no soul, but it had a lowing sound.

8987 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: The Samiri had seen Gabriel (peace be upon him) on a horse and took a handful of dust from the trace of the horse. When thirty nights had passed, he said: "O Children of Israel, you possess ornaments belonging to the people of Pharaoh, and this is forbidden to you. So bring what you have so that we may burn it." They brought him what they had, and they kindled a fire, and he cast the ornaments into the fire. When the ornaments melted, he cast that handful of dust into the fire, and it became a calf with a body that had a lowing sound; it lowed once and did not do so again.

8988 - My father told us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-A'la told us, Muhammad ibn Thawr told us, from Ma'mar, from Qatadah regarding "from their ornaments a calf," he said: They had borrowed ornaments from the people of Pharaoh, and the Samiri gathered them and fashioned a calf out of them, and Allah made it a body of flesh and blood that had a lowing sound.

8989 - Abu Zur'ah told us, 'Amr ibn Hammad told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi, he said: Moses said: "O Lord, this Samiri commanded them to take the calf; tell me, who blew the spirit into it?" The Lord said: "I did." He said: "O Lord, then it is You who have led them astray."

His saying: "It had a lowing sound"

8990 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid told us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan and Yazid ibn Harun—the wording is Muhammad's—told us, from Asbagh ibn Zayd al-Warraq, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, Sa'id ibn Jubayr told me regarding "it had a lowing sound," he said: By Allah, it never had a voice at all, but the wind would enter its rear and exit from its mouth, and that sound came from that.

8991 - Ibn Abi al-Thalj told us, Yazid ibn Harun told us, Hammad ibn Salamah informed us, from Farqad al-Sakhi, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: When it lowed, they would prostrate, and when it was silent, they would raise their heads.
