Did you not see that Allah said: "Did they not see that it did not speak to them, nor did it guide them to any way?"

8993 - Abu Zur‘ah told us, ‘Amr ibn Hammad told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi, he said: When the Children of Israel felt deep regret when Moses (peace be upon him) came, and they saw that they had gone astray, they said: "If our Lord does not have mercy upon us and forgive us, we will surely be among the losers." So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) refused to accept the repentance of the Children of Israel except by the condition that they disliked, which was to fight those who were with them when they worshipped the calf.

8994 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih told me, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "And when Moses returned to his people, angry and sorrowful," he said: Meaning angry and sad.

8995 - Abu Zur‘ah told us, Minjab ibn al-Harith told us, Bishr ibn ‘Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "Angry and sorrowful," he said: Sad. The same was narrated from al-Hasan and Malik ibn Dinar.

8996 - Muhammad ibn Sa‘id al-‘Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, my father told me, my uncle told me, from his father, from his father, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "And when Moses returned to his people, angry and sorrowful," he says: Sorrowful means sad. And in Surah al-Zukhruf, "when they angered Us," he says: "They provoked Us." Sorrow (al-asaf) has two meanings: anger and sadness.

8997 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Yahya ibn Khalaf told us, Abu ‘Asim told us, from ‘Isa ibn Maymun, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding "angry and sorrowful," he said: Distressed.
