His saying: "He said, 'You have made a poor substitute for me after I had gone.'"

8998 - al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Sabbah told us, 'Affan told us, Abu 'Awanah told us, from Abu Bishr, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "May Allah have mercy on Moses. One who witnesses is not like one who is informed. His Lord, Blessed and Exalted, informed him that his people had been put to the test, so he did not cast down the tablets. But when he saw them and witnessed them, he cast down the tablets."

8999 - My father told us, Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Dawraqi told us, Hajjaj told us, from Ibn Jurayj, Ya'la ibn Muslim informed me, from Sa'id, from Ibn 'Abbas: That when Moses cast down the tablets, they broke, and all but a sixth of them were raised up.

His saying: "And he took his brother by the head, dragging him toward him."

9000 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid al-Wasiti told us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Wasiti and Yazid ibn Harun told us (the wording being Muhammad's), from Asbagh ibn Zayd al-Warraq, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas who said: Moses returned to his people, angry and sorrowful, and said to them: "What have you heard in the Quran?" And he took his brother by the head, dragging him toward him, and he cast down the tablets out of anger. Then, he excused his brother for his excuse and sought forgiveness for him.

His saying: "And do not place me with the wrongdoing people."

9001 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah told us, Shababah told us, Warqa' told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: "And do not place me with the wrongdoing people," [meaning] the companions of the calf.

His saying: "He said, 'My Lord, forgive me and my brother.'"

9002 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid told us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan and Yazid ibn Harun told us (the wording being Muhammad's), from Asbagh ibn Zayd, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, Sa'id ibn Jubayr told me, from Ibn 'Abbas: Meaning His saying: "He said, 'My Lord, forgive me and my brother,'" he said: Then he excused his brother for his excuse and sought forgiveness for him.
