Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 5 · Page 178[Surah al-A'raf (7): Verse 153]

Translation · EN

I heard al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyad saying: Every instance in the Qur'an of "And thus do We recompense the fabricators" and the like, he says: Just as He destroyed those who were before, so He acts with the fabricators and the like.

His saying: "And those who committed evil deeds, then repented after them."

9010 - My father told us, Muslim ibn Ibrahim told us, Aban told us, Qatadah informed us, from 'Azrah, from al-Hasan al-'Urani, from 'Alqamah, from 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud that he was asked about that—meaning a man who commits adultery with a woman then marries her—so he recited this verse: "And those who committed evil deeds, then repented after them and believed, indeed your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving, Merciful." 'Abd Allah recited it ten times, and he neither commanded them nor forbade them from it.

9011 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr told us, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah told me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar told me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "Is Forgiving"—for what occurred from them during their shirk (polytheism).

9012 - Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, 'Abbas ibn al-Walid al-Narsi told us, Yazid ibn Zuray', told us, from Sa'id, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Is Forgiving," he means the numerous sins, or the grave ones—Yazid was uncertain.

9013 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr told us, Ibn Lahi'ah told us, 'Ata' told me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "Merciful," he said: Merciful to them after the repentance.

9014 - Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, 'Abbas ibn al-Walid told us, Yazid told us, from Sa'id, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Merciful," he said: To His servants.

His saying: "And when the anger subsided in Moses."

9015 - Abu Sa'id Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan told us, Yunus ibn Bukayr told us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq told me, Sadaqah ibn Yasar told me, Sa'id ibn Jubayr told me, from Ibn 'Abbas: "And when the anger subsided in Moses"—he said: When the anger departed from Moses, and that is the saying of Allah: "He took the tablets, and in their inscription there was guidance and mercy for those who are fearful of their Lord."

His saying: "And in their inscription there was guidance and mercy."

9016 - And through the same chain of narration to Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Allah gave Moses the Torah on seven tablets made of chrysolite; in them was an explanation of everything and an admonition of the Torah, written. When he brought them and saw that the Children of Israel had devoted themselves to the calf, he threw the Torah from his hand and it shattered. He turned toward Aaron and seized his head. Allah raised seven-sevenths of it, and one seventh remained. When the anger subsided in Moses, that is the saying of Allah: "He took the tablets, and in their inscription there was guidance and mercy for those who are fearful of their Lord," he said: It refers to what remained of them.
