chrysolite. In them was an explanation of everything and an admonition of the Torah, written. When he brought them and saw that the Children of Israel had devoted themselves to the calf, he threw the Torah from his hand and it shattered. He turned toward Aaron and seized his head. Allah raised six-sevenths of it, and one seventh remained. When the anger subsided in Moses, that is the saying of Allah: "He took the tablets, and in their inscription there was guidance and mercy for those who are fearful of their Lord," he said: It refers to what remained of them.
His saying: "For those who are fearful of their Lord."
9017 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj told us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding the saying of Allah: "For those who are fearful of their Lord," he said: They fear and are mindful.
His saying: "And Moses chose for Our appointment seventy men."
9018 - My father told us, Abu Bakr ibn Bashshar told us, Yahya ibn Sa'id told us, Sufyan told us, from Abu Ishaq, from 'Umarah, from 'Ali, he said: Moses and Aaron set out, along with Bishr and Bashir. He said: They went to the slope of a mountain, and Aaron slept on his bed and Allah took his soul. When Moses returned to the Children of Israel, they said to him: Where is Aaron? He said: Allah has taken his soul. They said: You killed him because you envied him for his character and his gentleness—or a word like that. He said: Choose whomever you wish. So they chose seventy men. That is His saying: "And Moses chose for Our appointment seventy men." When they reached him, they said: "O Aaron, who killed you?" He replied: "No one killed me, but Allah took my soul." They said: "O Moses, we will never disobey after this," and the earthquake seized them.
9019 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid al-Wasiti and Yazid ibn Harun told us, from Asbagh ibn Zayd, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, Sa'id ibn Jubayr told me, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: Then he—meaning Moses—turned to the Samiri and said to him: "What led you to do what you did?" He said: "I grasped a handful from the track of the Messenger, and I perceived it, and it was made to seem pleasing to me, so I cast it, and thus my soul prompted me," up to His saying: "And we will surely burn it in the sea, and scatter it with a scattering." If he were a god, he would not have been subjected to that. Thus the Children of Israel were certain.
