I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali told us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim told us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "That is how We recompensed them for their insolence," he says: "By their making lawful what Allah had forbidden them."

His saying, the Almighty: "Those who associated partners with Allah will say, 'If Allah had willed, we would not have associated [anything] and neither would our fathers.'"

8047 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "If Allah had willed, we would not have associated [anything]"—Allah, blessed and exalted be He, says: "If I had willed, I would have gathered you all upon guidance."
