I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding the saying of Allah: "And the shackles that were upon them," and he recited: "their hands are chained" [Al-Ma'idah: 64]. He said: Those are the shackles. He invited them to believe in the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, so that He would release that from them.

His saying, the Almighty: "So those who have believed in him, and honored him"

[The first interpretation]

9089 (*) - My father told us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "So those who have believed in him, and honored him"—meaning: they protected him, revered him, and supported him, "and followed the light which was sent down with him—those are the successful."

The second interpretation:

8357 - My father told us, al-Husayn ibn 'Ali al-Dinari told us, 'Uthman ibn 'Umar told us, from Shu'bah, from Abu Bashir, from 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "honored him," he said: They fight with him with the sword.

His saying, the Almighty: "And supported him, and followed the light which was sent down with him"

8358 - Muhammad ibn Yahya told us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' told us, from Sa'id, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And honored him and supported him," he said: As for supporting him and honoring him, you have been preceded in that, but the best among you is he who believes in him and follows the light which was sent down with him.

The second interpretation:

8359 - My father told us, Sahl ibn 'Uthman told us, a man he named told us, from al-Suddi regarding "honored him and supported him," he said: With the sword.

His saying, the Almighty: "Those are the successful"

8360 - Muhammad ibn Yahya told us, Abu Ghassan Muhammad ibn 'Umar Zunayj informed us, Salamah told us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, he said: In what Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad told me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "Those are the successful"—they are those who attained what they sought and were saved from the evil of that from which they fled.
