Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 5 · Page 195His saying (exalted is He): 'And We inspired Moses when his people asked him for water...' (the verse)

Translation · EN

The Children of Israel entered the sea, and there were twelve paths in the sea, one path for each tribe. When the paths split into walls, each tribe said: 'Our companions have been killed.' When Musa (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that, he supplicated to Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, and He made them into arches like layers, so that the last of them could see the first of them, until they all emerged.

His saying, the Almighty: "And We inspired to Musa when his people asked him for water..." the verse.

8377 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid told us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Wasiti and Yazid ibn Harun told us, from Asbagh ibn Zayd, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, Sa'id ibn Jubayr told us, from Ibn 'Abbas who said: And He placed between them a square stone. He said: And Musa was commanded, so he struck it with his staff.

8378 - Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn Abi al-Thalj told us, Yazid ibn Harun told us, Fudayl told us, from 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi: And He placed for them a stone like the head of an ox, carried on an ox. When they would settle at a location, they would place it down, and Musa would strike it with his staff, and twelve springs would gush forth from it. When they would travel, he would have it carried on an ox, and the water would remain within it.

8379 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad told us, Adam told us, Sakhrah told us, from 'Uthman ibn 'Ata', from his father who said: The Children of Israel had a stone, and Harun would place it, and Musa would strike it with the staff.

8380 - Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd Allah ibn al-Munadi informed us in what he wrote to me, Yunus ibn Muhammad al-Mu'addib told us, Shayban al-Nahwi told us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Strike with your staff the stone." He said: He was commanded concerning a stone to strike it with his staff. It was a stone from Tur (Mount Sinai), which they would carry with them; whenever they would stop, Musa would strike it with his staff.

His saying, the Almighty: "And there gushed forth from it"

8381 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And there gushed forth from it" (fanbajasat) he said: It burst forth.

His saying, the Almighty: "Twelve springs"

8382 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid told us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan and Yazid ibn Harun told us—the wording being that of Muhammad—from Asbagh ibn Zayd, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, Sa'id ibn Jubayr told us, from Ibn 'Abbas: Twelve springs, in every side of which were three springs.
