[His saying, the Almighty: We said to them]

9200 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad told us, Adam told us, Hamzah told us, from 'Uthman ibn 'Ata', from his father, who said: They split into three groups. A group that ate [the fish], a group that withdrew and did not forbid [it], and a group that forbade [it] and did not withdraw. Then, those who transgressed during the Sabbath were called out with three calls. They were called: 'O people of the village!' and a group became alert. Then they were called: 'O people of the village!' and a group larger than the first became alert. Then they were called: 'O people of the village!' and the men, women, and children became alert. Then Allah said to them: 'Be apes, despised.' So those who had forbidden them would enter upon them and say: 'O so-and-so, did we not forbid you?' and they would reply with their heads, meaning: Yes.

8467 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Muhammad ibn al-Mutawakkil told us, Damrah told us, from 'Uthman ibn 'Ata', from his father, who said: When it was the depth of the night, it was called out: 'O people of the village!' and they awoke from their sleep. Then it was called out: 'O people of the village!' and they put on their clothes and emerged from their houses. Then it was called out: 'O people of the village! Be apes, despised,' and they were transformed into apes.

His saying, the Almighty: "And when your Lord declared."

8468 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah told us, Shababah told us, Warqa' told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding his saying: "And when your Lord declared"—he said: Your Lord announced. It has also been narrated from Sufyan al-Thawri similar to this.

His saying, the Almighty: "That He would surely send against them until the Day of Resurrection."

8469 - Abu Usamah 'Abd Allah ibn Usamah al-Halabi told us in Kufa, 'Ali ibn Thabit told us, Ya'qub al-Qummi told us, from Ja'far, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: His saying, the Almighty and Majestic: "And when your Lord declared that He would surely send against them until the Day of Resurrection"—he said: They are the Jews. Allah sent the Arabs against them to collect tribute (kharaj) from them, and that is the severe punishment. No prophet had collected tribute except for Musa, peace be upon him; he collected it for thirteen years and then stopped, and no one else except the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

8470 - My father told us, Abu Hudhayfah told us, Shibl told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding "that He would surely send against them until the Day of Resurrection"—against the Jews and the Christians until the Day of Resurrection, someone who would afflict them with severe punishment. So Allah sent the nation of Muhammad, and they take the tribute (jizyah) from them while they are humbled."
