8471 - My father told us, Malik ibn Isma'il Abu Ghassan told us, Hasan ibn Salih told us regarding His saying: "And when your Lord declared that He would surely send against them until the Day of Resurrection, someone who would afflict them with severe punishment"—it refers to those who remained silent.

8472 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi reported to us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh told us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid ibn Aslam regarding the saying of Allah: "And when your Lord declared that He would surely send against them"—he said: He would surely send [punishment] against the Jews.

His saying: "Someone who would afflict them with severe punishment"

8473 - My father told us, Abu Salih told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih told me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Someone who would afflict them with severe punishment"—he said: Those who would afflict them are Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his nation until the Day of Resurrection.

His saying, the Almighty: "Severe punishment"

[The first interpretation]

8474 - And by the same chain from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Severe punishment"—he said: It is the jizyah (tribute). It has been narrated from Mujahid similarly.

8475 - Abu Usamah told us, 'Ali ibn Thabit told us, Ya'qub al-Qummi told us, from Ja'far, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding "Someone who would afflict them with severe punishment"—he said: It is the kharaj (land tax).

The second interpretation:

8476 - My father told us, Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Maqdisi and Yahya ibn 'Uthman ibn Kathir ibn Dinar told us, they both said: Damrah told us, from Ibn Shawdhab, from Matar regarding the saying of Allah: "That He would surely send against them until the Day of Resurrection, someone who would afflict them with severe punishment"—he said: Allah empowered the Arabs against them, so they remain in hardship because of them until the Day of Resurrection.

His saying, the Almighty: "Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty, but indeed, He is Forgiving, Merciful."

8477 - Abu Zur'ah told us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr told us, Ibn Lahi'ah told us, 'Ata' ibn Dinar told me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "Forgiving"—for what they committed of shirk (polytheism); "Merciful"—after repentance.
