Volume 5 · Page 217His saying (the Exalted): 'And they thought it was falling upon them'

Translation · EN

His saying, the Almighty: "And they thought that it was falling upon them."

8520 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid al-Wasiti told us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan and Yazid ibn Harun told us—the wording is that of Muhammad—from Asbagh ibn Zayd, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, Sa'id ibn Jubayr told me, from Ibn 'Abbas, meaning his saying: "And they thought that it was falling upon them," he said: They feared that it would fall upon them.

8521 - Ja'far ibn Munir al-Mada'ini told us, 'Abd al-Wahhab ibn 'Ata' told us, Dawud told us, from 'Amir, from Ibn 'Abbas, that he said: I am the most knowledgeable of people regarding why the Christians took the east as a direction of prayer—the saying of Allah: "And she withdrew from her family to an eastern place"—and [why] they took the birth of Jesus [as a day of celebration]. And I am the most knowledgeable of why the Jews prostrated on the edge of their faces—the saying of Allah: "And when We uprooted the mountain above them as if it were a canopy, and they thought that it was falling upon them, 'Take what We have given you with strength.'" He said: They prostrated and began to look at the mountain above them with the edge of their faces. It was a prostration that Allah was pleased with from them, so they adopted it as a tradition.

His saying, the Almighty: "Take what We have given you with strength."

8522 - And by the same chain from Ibn 'Abbas: "Take what We have given you with strength," so they took the Book with their right hands while they were disobedient, looking at the ground, and the Book which they took in their hands, while they were looking at the mountain for fear that it would fall upon them.

8523 - 'Imran ibn Bakkar al-Himsi told us, al-Rabi' ibn Rawh told us, Muhammad ibn Harb told us, al-Zubaydi told us, from 'Adi, from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from 'Amir, Ibn 'Abbas said: I surely know why the Jews prostrate on their side. Allah the Almighty said: "And when We uprooted the mountain above them as if it were a canopy, and they thought that it was falling upon them." He said: [He told them], "You shall surely accept my command, or else I will throw it upon you." So they prostrated while looking at it for fear that it would fall upon them, so it was a prostration that Allah was pleased with, and they adopted it as a tradition.

8524 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Muhammad ibn Abi Hammad told us, Mihran told us, from Sufyan, from al-A'mash, from Muslim al-Batin, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And when We uprooted the mountain above them as if it were a canopy," he said: The angels raised it above their heads, and it was said to them: "Take what We have given you with strength." So when they looked at the mountain, they said: "We hear and we obey," and when they looked at the Book, they said: "We hear and we disobey."
