His statement, the Exalted: "And made them testify against themselves, [saying], 'Am I not your Lord?' They said, 'Yes, we have testified.'"

8535 - Al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazid al-Bayruni narrated to us, via reading, Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb told us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam informed me, from his father, Zayd ibn Aslam, that he narrated from 'Ata' ibn Yasar, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) who said: "When Allah the Blessed and Exalted created Adam, He wiped his back, and every soul that He will create until the Day of Resurrection emerged from it. He also drew a rib from his ribs and created Eve from it. Then He took the covenant from them: 'Am I not your Lord?' They said: 'Yes, we have testified,' lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection: 'Indeed, we were of this unaware.' Then He snatched every soul of the children of Adam by His light onto his face, and He placed within him the tribulation that He wrote he would be afflicted with in the world, such as illnesses. Then He presented them to Adam and said: 'O Adam, these are your descendants.' And among them were the leper, the white-spotted, the blind, and various types of illnesses. Adam said: 'O Lord, why did You do this to my descendants?' He said: 'So that you may thank My favor, O Adam.' Adam then said: 'O Lord, who are these whom I see as the brightest of people in light?' He said: 'These are the Prophets, O Adam, from your descendants.' He asked: 'And who is this whom I see as the brightest of them in light?' He said: 'This is David, who will be among the last of the nations.' He asked: 'O Lord, how much lifespan did You allot him?' He said: 'Sixty years.' He asked: 'O Lord, how much did You allot for my lifespan?' He said: 'Such and such.' He said: 'O Lord, then increase it from my lifespan by forty years, so that his lifespan reaches one hundred years.' He said: 'Will you do that, O Adam?' He said: 'Yes, O Lord.' He said: 'Shall we write and seal it? Verily, if We write and seal it, We do not change it.' He said: 'I shall do so, O my Lord.' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: 'When the Angel of Death came to Adam to take his soul, he said: "What do you want, O Angel of Death?" He replied: "I want to take your soul." He said: "Has not forty years remained of my appointed time?" He said: "Did you not give it to your son, David?"' He said: 'No.' He said: 'So Abu Hurayrah used to say: Adam forgot, and his descendants forgot; Adam denied, and his descendants denied.' Ibn Shu'ayb said: Abu Hafs ibn Abi al-'Atikah informed me, saying: 'And his lifespan was one thousand years.'"

8536 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, told us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding his statement: "And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants," he said: Allah created Adam, then He extracted his descendants from his loins like tiny ants and said to them: "Who is your Lord?" They said: "Allah is our Lord." Then He returned them into his loins until everyone whose covenant He took is born; no one is added to them nor is anyone subtracted from them until the Hour is established.
