Qatadah: "but he detached himself from them, so Satan pursued him, and he became of the straying ones." This is a parable Allah set forth for whoever is presented with guidance but refuses to accept it and abandons it.
The Second Aspect:
8556 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Yaman told us, Isma'il ibn 'Ayyash told us, from Safwan, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr, regarding the statement of Allah: "so Satan pursued him, and he became of the straying ones," he said: It was his prostration to Satan when he appeared before him.
His statement, the Exalted: "And if We had willed, We could have elevated him thereby."
8557 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah told us, Warqa' told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His statement: "And if We had willed, We could have elevated him thereby," he said: We would have defended him.
His statement, the Exalted: "thereby"
8558 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh told us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the statement of Allah, the Exalted: "And if We had willed, We could have elevated him thereby," he said: By those signs.
His statement, the Exalted: "but he adhered to the earth"

8559 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah told us, Warqa' told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His statement: "but he adhered to the earth," he said: He settled.
8560 - My father narrated to us, Isma'il ibn Musa, the relative of al-Suddi, told us, Sharik told us, from Salim, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr: "but he adhered to the earth," he said: He inclined and stripped himself.
The Second Aspect:
8561 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Yaman told us, Isma'il ibn 'Ayyash told us, from Safwan ibn 'Amr, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr, regarding His statement: "adhered to the earth," he said: His prostration to Satan when he appeared before him.
8562 - And from Safwan ibn 'Amr, from Shurayh ibn 'Ubayd, from Yazid ibn Maysarah, something similar.
