His statement, the Exalted: "And turn away from the ignorant."
8685 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Yamani al-Hakam ibn Nafi' told us, Shu'ayb—who is Ibn Abi Hamzah—informed me, from al-Zuhri, 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Utbah informed me that 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas said: 'Uyaynah ibn Hisn ibn Hudhayfah ibn Badr arrived and stayed with his nephew al-Hurr ibn Qays ibn Hisn, who was among those whom 'Umar ibn al-Khattab would bring close. 'Uyaynah said to his nephew: "Do you have access to this leader, so that you may ask for my permission to see him?" He said: "I will ask for your permission to see him." Ibn 'Abbas said: So al-Hurr asked permission for 'Uyaynah, and 'Umar gave him permission. When he entered upon him, he said: "O son of al-Khattab! By Allah, you do not give us abundantly, and you do not judge between us with justice." 'Umar became angry until he intended to act against him, so al-Hurr said to him: "O Commander of the Faithful! Indeed, Allah said to His Prophet: 'Take what is given freely, and enjoin what is right, and turn away from the ignorant'—and this [man] is among the ignorant." He said: By Allah, he did not go beyond it when he recited it, for he was someone who would pause before the Book of Allah (1).
8686 - My father narrated to us, 'Abdah ibn Sulayman al-Marwazi told us in Tarsus, Ibn al-Mubarak reported, Mu'ammar reported, from Qatadah, who said: Turning away from people means that someone speaks to you while you turn away from him and act haughty.
8687 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh ibn al-Faraj told us, he said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding the statement of Allah: "Take what is given freely, and enjoin what is right, and turn away from the ignorant"—he said: He commanded him, so he turned away from them for ten years, then He commanded him to perform Jihad.
8688 - Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la informed us by way of recitation, Ibn Wahb reported, Malik ibn Anas informed me, from 'Abd Allah ibn Nafi', that Salim ibn 'Abd Allah passed by a caravan of the people of al-Sham, and there was a bell on it. He said: "This is something that is forbidden." They said: "We are more knowledgeable about this than you; only the large bell is disliked, but as for something like this, there is no harm in it." Salim remained silent and said: "And turn away from the ignorant."
His statement, the Exalted: "And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan..."
8423 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid reported, Yazid told us, Sa'id told us, from Qatadah regarding His statement: "And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah"—he said: Allah knew that this enemy is seeking and intending [harm].
