[His saying, the Almighty: "[giving] security from Him."]
[The first interpretation]
8841 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid (1) regarding His saying: "Drowsiness [giving] security from Him," meaning security from Allah.
The second interpretation:
8842 - Al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazid informed us by way of reading, Ibn Shu'ayb ibn Shabur informed us, Sa'id ibn Bashir informed us from Qatadah regarding His saying: "[Remember] when He overwhelmed you with drowsiness [giving] security from Him," meaning a mercy from Him, [and] security from the enemy.
His saying, the Almighty: "And He sent down upon you from the sky, rain."

8843 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Hafs ibn Ghiyath narrated to us from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib regarding "And He sent down upon you from the sky, rain to purify you thereby," he said: It was a drizzle on the day of Badr, meaning it afflicted them. It was narrated from al-Sha'bi the like of that.
8844 - My father narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, Ibn Idris narrated to us from Ibn Ishaq, Yazid ibn Ruman narrated to me from 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, he said: Allah sent the rain, and the valley was sandy, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and his companions received from it what made the ground firm and did not prevent them from traveling, while the Quraysh received [rain] such that they could not move forward with it.
The second interpretation:
8845 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid (2) regarding His saying: "And He sent down upon you from the sky, rain to purify you thereby," [meaning] the rain; He sent it down upon them before the drowsiness, so He extinguished the dust with the rain, the ground became firm because of it, their souls became tranquil because of it, and their feet were made firm because of it. It was narrated from al-Dahhak and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam the like of that.
His saying, the Almighty: "To purify you thereby."
8864 - Al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazid informed us by way of reading, Ibn Shu'ayb informed us, Sa'id ibn Bashir informed us from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And He sent down upon you from the sky, rain to purify you thereby," and that was because the polytheists

٨٨٤١ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ ثنا شَبَابَةُ ثنا وَرْقَاءُ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ «١»
قَوْلُهُ: النُّعَاسَ أَمَنَةً مِنْهُ أَمْنٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ.
الْوَجْهُ الثَّانِي:
٨٨٤٢ - أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ مَزْيَدٍ قِرَاءَةً أَنْبَأَ ابْنُ شُعَيْبِ بْنُ شَابُورَ أَنْبَأَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ فِي قَوْلِهِ: إِذْ يُغَشِّيكُمُ النُّعَاسَ أَمَنَةً مِنْهُ رَحْمَةً مِنْهُ أَمَنَةً مِنَ الْعَدُوِّ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَيُنَزِّلُ عليكم من السماء ماء

٨٨٤٣ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ ثنا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ وَيُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ بِهِ قَالَ: طَشٌّ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ، يَعْنِي أَصَابَهُمْ. وَرُوِيَ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ: مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ.
٨٨٤٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ ثنا ابْنُ إِدْرِيسَ عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ رُومَانَ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ: بَعَثَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاءَ وَكَانَ الْوَادِي دَهْسًا وَأَصَابَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- وَأَصْحَابُهُ مِنْهَا مَا لَبَدَ الأَرْضَ وَلَمْ يَمْنَعْهُمُ الْمَسِيرَ، وَأَصَابَ قُرَيْشٌ مَا لَمْ يَقْدِرُوا عَلَى أَنْ يَرْتَحِلُوا مَعَهُ.
الْوَجْهُ الثَّانِي:
٨٨٤٥ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ ثنا شَبَابَةُ ثنا وَرْقَاءُ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ «٢» قَوْلُهُ: وَيُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ بِهِ الْمَطَرَ أَنْزَلَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ قَبْلَ النُّعَاسِ فَأَطْفَأَ بِالْمَطَرِ الْغُبَارَ وَالْتَبَدَتْ بِهِ الأَرْضُ وَطَابَتْ بِهِ أَنْفُسُهُمْ وَثَبَتَتْ بِهِ أَقْدَامُهُمْ، وَرُوِيَ عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ وَعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ. نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ بِهِ
