8917 - Abu 'Ubayd Allah, the nephew of Ibn Wahb, narrated to us, Shu'ayb ibn al-Layth narrated to me, my father narrated to us, 'Aqil informed me, from Ibn Shihab, that 'Abd Allah ibn Tha'labah ibn Su'ayr al-'Udhri, an ally of Banu Zuhrah, narrated to him: That the one seeking a judgment on the day of Badr was Abu Jahl, and that he said: 'O Allah, whichever of us is more cutting to kinship, and brought that which is not recognized, then destroy him this morning.' This was his 'istiftah' (seeking of judgment), so Allah, the Almighty, said: 'If you seek a judgment, then the judgment has come to you'—to the end of the verse.

8918 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: 'If you seek a judgment, then the judgment has come to you,' he said: He means by that: the polytheists, and if you seek help, then the aid has come to you.

8919 - Muhammad ibn al-'Abbas, the freed slave of the Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr narrated to us, from 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, regarding 'If you seek a judgment, then the judgment has come to you,' i.e., due to the saying of Abu Jahl: 'O Allah, [the one who is] more cutting to kinship and brought us what is not recognized, then destroy him this morning.' The 'istiftah' is to request justice in supplication.

8920 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from Mutarrif, from 'Atiyyah, regarding the saying of Allah: 'If you seek a judgment, then the judgment has come to you,' he said: Abu Jahl said: 'O Allah, grant victory to the mightier of the two groups and the more honorable of the two parties,' so 'If you seek a judgment, then the judgment has come to you' was revealed.

8921 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas: 'Then the judgment has come to you,' i.e., the aid has come to you.

8922 - Al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazyad informed us by way of reading, Ibn Shu'ayb informed me, 'Uthman ibn 'Ata' informed me, from his father, regarding 'Then the judgment has come to you,' he means: the companions of Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

8923 - Abu Sa'id ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, Sahl ibn al-Sarraj narrated to us, who said: I heard al-Hasan, regarding the saying of Allah: 'If you seek a judgment, then the judgment has come to you,' he said: The verdict. It was narrated from 'Ikrimah the same as that.
