[Second interpretation]

8950 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-Abbas ibn al-Walid reported, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, from Sa'id, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: 'When He calls you to that which gives you life,' he said: It is this Quran; in it is life, reliance, salvation, and protection in the world and the Hereafter.

8951 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us—in what he wrote to me—Ahmad ibn Mufaddal narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: As for 'gives you life,' it refers to Islam; He gave them life after their death, after their disbelief.

[Fourth interpretation]

8952 - My father narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, Ibn Idris narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, regarding 'When He calls you to that which gives you life,' he says: [It refers to] the war through which Allah honored you after humiliation, and strengthened you after weakness.

His saying, the Almighty: 'And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart.'

8953 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dashtaki narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far al-Razi narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, regarding His saying: 'And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart,' he said: His knowledge intervenes between a man and his heart.

His saying, the Almighty: 'Intervenes between a man and his heart.'

8954 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd Allah al-Razi, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding 'Intervenes between a man and his heart,' he said: He intervenes between the believer and disbelief and the disobedience of Allah, and He intervenes between the disbeliever and faith and the obedience of Allah.

8955 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Sulayman narrated to us, Isma'il ibn Zakariyya narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn 'Awn al-Khurasani, from Abu Ghalib al-Khalji, he said: I asked Ibn 'Abbas about the saying of Allah: 'Intervenes between a man and his heart,' he said: He intervenes between the believer and his disobedience which would necessitate destruction through it, so the son of Adam must inevitably commit something short of that, and the destructive sins which would necessitate for him the abode of the wicked shall not enter his heart. And He intervenes between the disbeliever and his obedience, so he shall not attain of His obedience anything that would necessitate the good which His allies attain. This was according to the foreknowledge to which the command of Allah ends and upon which the deeds of the servants rest.
