‘Abbad. “And do not be like those who came forth from their homes, insolently” means: do not be like Abu Jahl and his companions, who said: "We shall not return until we arrive at Badr, slaughter camels there, drink wine, have singing girls play music for us, and the Arabs hear of us."

His saying, the Almighty: "Insolently"

9151 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, 'Ubayd Allah narrated to us, from Isra'il, from Abu Yahya, from Mujahid, regarding "like those who came forth from their homes, insolently," he said: They were the people of Badr, meaning: the polytheists.

9152 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, from Sa'id, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "And do not be like those who came forth from their homes, insolently," he said: They were the polytheists of Quraysh who fought the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on the day of Badr. They went forth with arrogance and pride. It was said to them on that day: "Return, for others have departed and you have attained victory." But they said: "No, by Allah, not until the people of the Hijaz speak of our march and our numbers."

His saying, the Almighty: "And to be seen by people"

9153 - Muhammad ibn al-Abbas narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Yahya ibn 'Abbad ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me, from his father, 'Abbad, regarding "insolently and to be seen by people," meaning: let not your affairs be for show, nor for reputation, nor to seek what is in the hands of people. Purify your intention and your seeking of reward for Allah in supporting your religion and aiding your Prophet; do not work except for that and do not seek anything else.

His saying, the Almighty: "And they avert from the way of Allah, and Allah is encompassing of what they do"

9154 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, Ibn Muzahim informed us, from Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "And Allah is encompassing of what they do," he says: His knowledge encompasses their deeds.

His saying, the Almighty: "And when Satan made their deeds pleasing to them"

9155 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd ibn 'Atiyyah informed me - in what he wrote to me - my father narrated to us, my uncle al-Husayn narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas, regarding "And when Satan made their deeds pleasing to them," and indeed Satan had made their deeds pleasing to them.
