9156 - Muhammad ibn al-Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Yahya ibn 'Abbad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me, from his father, 'Abbad, then he said: "And when Satan made their deeds pleasing to them, and said, 'No one among the people can overcome you today, and indeed, I am a protector for you.'" He mentions the way Iblis lured them and his resemblance to Suraqah ibn Ju'shum when they mentioned the war that had occurred between them and the tribe of Banu 'Abd Manat ibn Kinanah.
His saying, the Almighty: "And said, 'No one among the people can overcome you today, and indeed, I am a protector for you.'"
9157 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Iblis came with a troop of devils, and he had with him a banner in the form of men from the tribe of Banu Mudlij, and the devil was in the form of Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju'shum. The devil said: "No one among the people can overcome you today, and indeed, I am a protector for you." Then Jibril, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, approached Iblis. When he saw him—and his hand was in the hand of a man from the polytheists—Iblis pulled his hand away and fled, turning his back, along with his followers. The man said: "O Suraqah, do you claim that you are a protector for us?" He replied: "Indeed, I see what you do not see; I fear Allah, and Allah is severe in punishment."
9158 - Abu al-Azhar informed me—in what he wrote to me—Wahb ibn Jarir narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn al-Hakam, from al-Dahhak, regarding His saying: "And when Satan made their deeds pleasing to them, and said, 'No one among the people can overcome you today, and indeed, I am a protector for you.'" The devil marched with them with his banner and his soldiers, and he cast into the hearts of the polytheists that no one would ever overcome them, and that they were fighting for their religion and the religion of their forefathers.
His saying, the Almighty: "But when the two companies sighted each other"
9159 - Muhammad ibn al-Abbas, the freed slave of Banu Hashim, narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Amr Zunayj narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, Yahya ibn 'Abbad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me, from his father, 'Abbad: "But when the two companies sighted each other," the enemy of Allah looked at the soldiers of Allah, the angels, with whom Allah supported His Messenger and the believers against their enemy, and he turned on his heels.
His saying, the Almighty: "Turned on his heels"
9160 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Munib narrated to us, Abu Mu'adh al-Nahwi narrated to us, from 'Ubayd ibn Sulayman, from al-Dahhak: "But when they met, he turned on his heels," he says: He returned retreating.
