[The first perspective]

Those who interpreted it as [an obligation] to give at the time of threshing and at the time of harvest, and that when he measures it, he should set aside its Zakah:

7951 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj told us, Waki' told us, from Sufyan, from Mansur and Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: "And give its due on the day of its harvest," he said: At the time of threshing and at the time of harvest, at the time of reaping, he sets it aside for them, and when he measures it, he sets aside its Zakah. It was also narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubayr similarly.

[The second perspective]

Those who interpreted it as referring to the obligatory Zakah, and that the Zakah abrogates the [previous practice of] giving from it on the day of harvest:

7952 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj told us, Abu Mu'awiyah told us, from Hajjaj, from al-Hakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn 'Abbas: Regarding His saying: "And give its due on the day of its harvest," he said: It is the tenth [one-tenth] and half of the tenth [one-twentieth].

7953 - 'Umar ibn Shabbah told us, 'Abd al-Samad ibn 'Abd al-Warith told us, Yazid ibn Dirham told us, from Anas ibn Malik, regarding His saying: "And give its due on the day of its harvest," he said: It is the obligatory Zakah.

7954 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj told us, Ibn Idris told us, from his father, from 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi: "And give its due on the day of its harvest," he said: They used to give something from it when they harvested, when they threshed, and when they winnowed; then the tenth and the half of the tenth abrogated that.

It was narrated from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, 'Ikrimah, al-Nakha'i, Ibn al-Hanafiyyah, Tawus, 'Ata' al-Khurasani, al-Hasan, al-Dahhak, Jabir ibn Zayd, al-Suddi, Qatadah, and Malik ibn Anas that they said: It is the tenth and the half of the tenth.

7955 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj told us, Waki' told us, from Isra'il, from Jabir, from 'Ikrimah, he said: The Zakah abrogated every charity in the Qur'an.

[The third perspective]

Those who interpreted it as giving a portion to one's Dhimmi (non-Muslim citizen) relatives:

7956 - It was mentioned from 'Affan, 'Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad told us, Yunus told us, from al-Hasan, regarding His saying: "And give its due on the day of its harvest," he said: His relatives from among the Jews, Christians, and Magians, he gives a portion to them.

7957 - My father told us, Yahya ibn al-Mughirah told us, Jarir told us, from al-'Ala' ibn al-Musayyib, from Hammad, regarding His saying: "And give its due on the day of its harvest," he said: They used to feed [people] from it while it was fresh dates.

His saying: "On the day of its harvest"

7958 - My father told us, Talhah told us, from Ibn 'Abbas: Regarding His saying: "And give its due on the day of its harvest," [it means] the day it is measured and its quantity is known. It was narrated from al-Dahhak similarly.
