[The third interpretation]
8338 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn al-Junayd told us, ‘Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah told us, Abu Hafs al-Abbar ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Musayyib told us, from Zayd ibn ‘Ali, he said: He was asked about this verse: "And the clothing of righteousness," and he said: Islam. Something similar has been narrated from Qatadah.
[The fourth interpretation]
8339 - al-Mundhir ibn Shadhan told us, Hawdhah told me, ‘Awn told us, from Ma‘bad al-Juhani: "And the clothing of righteousness," is: Modesty (haya’).
[The fifth interpretation]
8340 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh reported, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd, regarding the saying of Allah: "And the clothing of righteousness," he says: He fears Allah, so he conceals his private parts; that is the clothing of righteousness.
His saying, the Almighty: "That is better."
8341 - Abu Zur‘ah told us, Safwan ibn Salih told us, al-Walid told us, Shu‘ayb ibn Ruzayq told us, from ‘Ata’ al-Khurasani, from ‘Ikrimah, regarding the saying of Allah the Almighty: "And the clothing of righteousness, that is better," it is said: What the righteous will wear on the Day of Resurrection, that is better than the clothing of the people of this world.
His saying, the Almighty: "That is from the signs of Allah."
8342 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn al-Junayd told us, Hafs al-Muhruqani told us, Ishaq ibn Isma‘il Hayawayh told us, from Sulayman ibn Arqam, he said: I heard al-Hasan say: I saw ‘Uthman delivering a sermon, and he said: O people, fear Allah regarding these inner secrets, for I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: "By Him in whose hand is my soul, no one ever performs a deed in secret except that Allah clothes him with his cloak publicly; if it is good, then good, and if it is evil, then evil." Then he recited: "And fine clothing (riyash)," and he did not say: "And fine clothing (rish)." And I saw ‘Uthman delivering a sermon, then he recited this verse: "And the clothing of righteousness, that is better, that is from the signs of Allah." He said: He meant the beautiful demeanor (al-samt al-hasan).
