Volume 5 · Page 71His saying (the Almighty): And eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess

Translation · EN

8378 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj told us, ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Musa told us, from ‘Uthman ibn al-Aswad, from Mujahid: "Take your adornment at every masjid," he said: That which covers the private parts, even if it is a cloak (‘aba’ah).

His saying, the Almighty: "And eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like the excessive."

[The First Aspect]

8379 - My father told me, Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la told us, Muhammad ibn Thawr told us, from Ma‘mar, from Ibn Tawus, from his father, from Ibn ‘Abbas, meaning his saying: "And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like the excessive," [he said]: Allah has permitted eating and drinking as long as it does not involve excess or pride.

8380 - My father told us, Ibrahim ibn Musa told us, Hisham ibn Yusuf informed us, from Ibn Jurayj, from ‘Ata’, from Ibn ‘Abbas: "And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like the excessive," he said: In food and drink.

8381 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj told us, Abu Khalid al-Ahmar told us, from ‘Uthman ibn al-Aswad, from Mujahid: He said: If you were to spend the equivalent of Mount Abu Qubays in gold in the obedience of Allah, it would not be excess; and if you were to spend a sa‘ in the disobedience of Allah, it would be excess.

8382 - My father told us, ‘Amr ibn ‘Ali told us, Ibn al-Zibriqan told us, Musa ibn ‘Ubaydah told us, from Muhammad ibn Ka‘b, regarding His saying: "And be not excessive," [he said]: The excess (is) that one does not give in accordance with the truth (i.e., duty).

8383 - It was mentioned from Muhammad ibn Bashshar Bundar, Muhammad ibn Bakr al-Bursani told us, Abu Ma‘dan told us, from ‘Awn ibn ‘Abd Allah, regarding the saying of Allah: "And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like the excessive," he said: The one who eats the wealth of others.

8384 - Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi‘ told us, ‘Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ibn Jurayj informed us, Abu Bakr ibn ‘Abd Allah informed me, from ‘Amr ibn Sulaym and from others: Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib said regarding His saying: "And be not excessive," he said: Do not withhold charity, for then you will become hard-hearted. Ibn Jurayj said: Others said: Mu‘adh ibn Jabal cut his palm trees and kept giving away their fruit in charity until nothing remained of them; then [the verse] was revealed: "And be not excessive."

8385 - Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi informed us in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi: "And be not excessive. Indeed, He does not like the excessive," as for "be not excessive," [it means]: Do not give away your wealth and then sit back as poor people.
