He said: The people of the Jahiliyyah used to forbid things that Allah had made lawful, such as clothes and other things. This is the meaning of Allah's saying: "Say, 'Have you seen what Allah has sent down to you of provision, of which you have made [some] lawful and [some] unlawful?'" [1]. This is what it refers to. So Allah the Almighty revealed: "Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants?'"
8393 - Ibn Jahd told us, Ibrahim ibn Musa told us, Hisham told us, from Ibn Jurayj, Ibn Kathir informed me, from Tawus that he read: "Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah," then he said: He did not command them to use silk or brocade, but it was the case that if one of them performed tawaf while wearing his clothes, he would be struck and they would be torn from him, and if he performed tawaf naked, he would find his clothes [where he left them].
[The Second Aspect]
8394 - My father told us, Muhammad ibn Sa‘id ibn al-Walid al-Khuza‘i told us, al-Mu‘alla ibn Usayd told us, my grandmother and my father told me that Sinan ibn Salamah used to wear khazz (silk-wool blend fabric). The people said to him: "O Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, someone like you wears khazz?" He said to them: "Who is it that has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants?"
His saying, the Almighty: "And the pure things of provision."
8395 - It was mentioned from Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri, Isra’il told us, from Salim, from Sa‘id: "And the pure things of provision," he said: The pure things are food.
8396 - Ahmad ibn ‘Uthman ibn Hakim informed us in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi: His saying: "And the pure things of provision," it is animal fat (wadak).
8397 - Abu Zur‘ah told us, Safwan ibn Salih told us, al-Walid told us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir told us, from Qatadah: His saying: "And the pure things of provision," he said: The lawful.
8398 - Muhammad ibn Yahya told us, al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray‘ told us, from Sa‘id, from Qatadah: His saying: "Say, 'Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought forth for His servants, and the pure things of provision?" it is what the people of the Jahiliyyah forbade upon themselves regarding their wealth: the bahirah, the sa’ibah, the wasilah, and the ham. It was a prohibition from Satan and was not from Allah.
(1). Surah Yunus, verse 59.
