Shabur, Shayban informed me, Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq al-Hamdani reported from 'Amir al-Sha'bi, who said: Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman said: The companions of the A'raf are a people whose good deeds caused them to surpass the Fire, but their bad deeds fell short of bringing them into Paradise. When their eyes are turned towards the companions of the Fire, they say: "Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people." While they are in this state, their Lord will appear to them and say: "Rise and enter Paradise, for I have indeed forgiven you."
8500 - Ali ibn al-Husayn told us, Muhammad ibn 'Isa told us, Jarir told us, from 'Umarah, from Abu Zur'ah, who said: The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was asked about the companions of the A'raf, and he said: They are the last of the servants to have their judgment rendered. When the Lord of the Worlds finishes judging between the servants, He will say to them: "You are a people whom your deeds have brought out of the Fire, yet they were incapable of bringing you into Paradise. Go, for you are My freedmen, so graze in Paradise wherever you wish." And it was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that he said: They are a people whose good deeds and bad deeds were equal; their bad deeds prevented them from entering Paradise, and their good deeds prevented them from entering the Fire.
8501 - 'Abbad ibn 'Uthman al-Marwazi told us, Salamah ibn Sulayman told us, 'Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak reported, Abu Bakr al-Hudhali reported, he said: Sa'id ibn Jubayr said, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Whoever has his good deeds and bad deeds equal, he shall be among the companions of the A'raf.
The third aspect:
8502 - My father told us, Yahya ibn al-Mughirah told us, Jarir reported, from Mansur, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from 'Abd Allah ibn al-Harith, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: The A'raf is the wall that is between Paradise and the Fire, and the companions of the A'raf remain in that place until, when Allah begins to grant them well-being, they are taken to a river called "The Life," the banks of which are of gold reeds, inlaid with pearls, and its soil is musk. They are cast into it until their bodies are restored and they are rejuvenated. On their throats there is a white mark by which they are recognized. Once their complexions have been restored, the All-Merciful, Blessed and Exalted, comes to them and says: "Wish for whatever you want." They continue wishing until, when their wishes are exhausted, He says to them: "You shall have what you wished for, and seventy times as much." He said: They then enter Paradise with a white mark on their throats by which they are recognized. He said: They are called the "poor of Paradise."
