From Ibn 'Abbas: He said: The companions of the A'raf are men who had grave sins, yet the final determination of their affair rested with Allah. They were stationed in that place. When they looked at the people of the Fire, they recognized them by the blackness of their faces, and said: "Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people." And when they looked at the people of Paradise, they recognized them by the whiteness of their faces.

8510 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah told us, Shababah told us, Warqa' told us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "By their mark," [meaning] black faces and blue eyes.

His saying, the Almighty: "And they will call out to the companions of Paradise."

8511 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed me in what he wrote to me, Asbagh told us, he said: I heard Ibn Zayd saying, regarding His saying: "And they will call out to the companions of Paradise," he said: When they saw that their faces had become white.

His saying, the Almighty: "That, 'Peace be upon you.'"

8512 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn al-Munadi told us, Yunus ibn Muhammad told us, al-Hakam ibn al-Salt told us, he said: I heard Abu 'Ubaydah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Ammar ibn Yasir—and Ibn Abi Labid asked him—about His saying: "Peace be upon you," he said: The angels greet the people of Paradise.

8513 - Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim informed me in what he wrote to me, Ahmad ibn Mufaddal told us, Asbat told us, from al-Suddi, regarding His saying: "They recognize each by their mark," [he said:] They recognize the people of the Fire by the blackness of their faces, and the people of Paradise by the whiteness of their faces. When they pass by them as a group being led to Paradise, they say: "Peace be upon you."

His saying, the Almighty: "They have not entered it."

8514 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed me in what he wrote to me, my father told me, my uncle told me, from his father, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas: Regarding His saying: "They have not entered it," he said: They have not entered Paradise.

His saying, the Almighty: "Yet they hope."
