Surat al-Tawbah
Concerning the Surah in which repentance (al-Tawbah) is mentioned.
His saying, the Almighty: "An acquittal from Allah and His Messenger." (Surah al-Tawbah: 1)
9948 - Ahmad ibn Mansur al-Ramadi narrated to us, Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Ibn al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah regarding His saying: "An acquittal from Allah and His Messenger," he said: When the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was at the time of Hunayn, he performed Umrah from al-Ji'ranah, then he appointed Abu Ali as the leader for that Hajj. Ma'mar said: al-Zuhri said: Abu Hurayrah used to narrate that Abu Bakr ordered Abu Hurayrah to proclaim the acquittal during the Hajj of Abu Bakr in Mecca. Abu Hurayrah said: Then the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent Ali after us and ordered him to proclaim the acquittal, while Abu Bakr was in charge of the pilgrimage as he was, or he said: in his capacity.
9215 - Ahmad ibn Mansur al-Ramadi narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Sulayman al-Wasiti narrated to us, Abbad ibn Awwam narrated to us, from Sufyan ibn al-Husayn, from al-Hakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and ordered him to proclaim these words. Then he sent Ali after him. While Abu Bakr was on his way, he heard the groaning of the Prophet's she-camel, al-Qaswa'. Abu Bakr went out in alarm, thinking it was the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, but it was Ali. He handed the scroll of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to him, and he (the Prophet) made him (Abu Bakr) the leader of the pilgrimage and ordered Ali to proclaim these words. They set out and performed Hajj. Ali stood during the days of Tashriq and proclaimed: "The protection of Allah and His Messenger is absolved from every polytheist. So travel freely in the land for four months, and no polytheist shall perform Hajj after this year, no naked person shall circumambulate the House, and no one shall enter Paradise except a believer." Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, used to proclaim it, and when his voice became hoarse, Abu Hurayrah would stand and proclaim it.

(2) Ibn Kathir said: This chain has a strangeness in that the leader of the Hajj in the year of the Umrah of al-Ji'ranah was only 'Attab ibn Asid, whereas Abu Bakr was the leader in the year nine. 4/47.
