10401 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, from Sa'id, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And they did not resent except that Allah and His Messenger had enriched them from His bounty," he said: There was blood money (diyah) owed to 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) paid it for him.
The second interpretation:
10402 - My father narrated to us, al-Hakam ibn Musa narrated to us, 'Abbad ibn 'Abbad al-Muhallabi narrated to us, from Hisham ibn 'Urwah, from his father, regarding "And they did not resent except that Allah and His Messenger had enriched them from His bounty," he said: Julas had undertaken a debt, or a debt was upon him, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) paid it on his behalf. That is the meaning of His saying: "And they did not resent except that Allah and His Messenger had enriched them from His bounty."
His saying, the Almighty: "If they repent, it would be better for them."
10403 - My father narrated to us, al-Hakam ibn Musa narrated to us, 'Abbad ibn 'Abbad al-Muhallabi narrated to us, from Hisham ibn 'Urwah, from his father, regarding "If they repent, it would be better for them." Julas ibn Suwayd al-Ansari had said: "'Umayr ibn Sa'd has spoken the truth, O Messenger of Allah," meaning: regarding what he had reported to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) of his saying: "If what Muhammad says is true, then he is worse than a donkey." He had not sworn that he did not say it. He said: "I have said it, O Messenger of Allah, and Allah has offered me repentance, and I repent to Allah and ask His forgiveness for what I said." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to 'Umayr: "Your ear has been faithful, and your Lord has verified your words."
His saying, the Almighty: "But if they turn away, Allah will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and there will not be for them on earth any protector or helper."
10404 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said regarding His saying: "But if they turn away," he said: from their disbelief.
His saying, the Almighty: "And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah."
10405 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Mahbub ibn Mihraz al-Qawariri narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from 'Umarah, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid, he said: 'Abd Allah said: Judge the hypocrite by three things: if he speaks, he lies; if he promises, he breaks it; and if he makes a covenant, he acts treacherously. That is because Allah says: "And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah: 'If He gives us of His bounty, we will surely spend in charity..." (the verse).
