His saying, the Almighty: "If He gives us of His bounty," to "the righteous."
10406 - My father narrated to us, Hisham ibn 'Ammar narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb ibn Shabur narrated to us, Mu'an ibn Rifa'ah al-Salami narrated to us, from Abu 'Abd al-Malik 'Ali ibn Yazid al-Hilali, that he informed him from al-Qasim Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, who is the freedman (mawla) of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mu'awiyah, that he informed him from Abu Umamah al-Bahili, from Tha'labah ibn Hatib al-Ansari, that he said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "Supplicate to Allah to grant me wealth." He said: "Woe to you, O Tha'labah! A little for which you fulfill the gratitude is better than a lot which you cannot endure." He said: Then he said it another time, so he (the Prophet) said: "Are you not content to be like the Prophet of Allah? By Him in Whose hand is my soul, if I wished that the mountains flow with gold and silver for me, they would have flowed." He said: "By Him who sent you with the truth, if you supplicate to Allah to grant me wealth, I will surely give every person with a right his right." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "O Allah, grant him wealth, O Allah, grant Tha'labah wealth." He said: So he acquired sheep, and they grew as worms grow. Then Allah revealed concerning him: "And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah: 'If He gives us of His bounty, we will surely spend in charity and be among the righteous.'"
10407 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding "And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah: 'If He gives us of His bounty, we will surely spend in charity'" - two men who came out to a group sitting and said: "By Allah, if Allah grants us from His bounty, we will surely spend in charity." But when Allah granted them, they were stingy with it.
His saying, the Almighty: "So when He gave them from His bounty, they were stingy with it and turned away while they were refusing."
10408 - My father narrated to us, Hisham ibn 'Ammar narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb narrated to us, Mu'an ibn Rifa'ah al-Salami narrated to us, from Abu 'Abd al-Malik 'Ali ibn Yazid al-Hilali, that he informed him from al-Qasim Abu 'Abd al-Rahman: that he informed him from Abu Umamah al-Bahili, from Tha'labah ibn Hatib: that he said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "Supplicate to Allah to grant me wealth." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Allah, grant him wealth, O Allah, grant Tha'labah wealth." He said: So he acquired sheep, and they grew as worms grow until the city became too small for him. So he moved away from his dwelling and settled in one of its valleys, until he began praying Dhuhr and 'Asr in the congregation and leaving what was besides them. Then they grew and became numerous until he left the prayers except Jumu'ah. And they were growing as worms grow until he left Jumu'ah, and he began to meet the travelers on Friday to ask them for news. So he (the Prophet) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about him, and he said:
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: لَئِنْ آتَانَا مِنْ فَضْلِهِ إِلَى الصَّالِحِينَ.
١٠٤٠٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبِ بْنِ شَابُورَ ثنا مُعَانُ بْنُ رِفَاعَةَ السَّلامِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْهِلالِيِّ، أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَهُوَ مَوْلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ، أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ الْبَاهِلِيِّ عَنْ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ حَاطِبٍ الأَنْصَارِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- ادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يرزقني مالا فَقَالَ: وَيْحَكَ يَا ثَعْلَبَةُ، قَلِيلٌ تُؤَدِّي شُكْرَهُ خَيْرٌ مِنْ كَثِيرٍ لَا تُطِيقُهُ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ قَالَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى، فَقَالَ: مَا تَرْضَى أَنْ تَكُونَ مِثْلَ نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ؟ فَوَ الَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَوْ شِئْتُ أَنْ تَسِيلَ مَعِيَ الْجِبَالُ ذَهَبًا وَفِضَّةً لَسَالَتْ، قَالَ: وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ، لَئِنْ دَعَوْتَ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِيَ مَالا لأُعْطِيَنَّ كُلَّ ذِي حَقٍّ حَقَّهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْهُ مَالا، اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْ ثَعْلَبَةَ مَالا، قَالَ: فَاتَّخَذَ غَنَمًا فَنَمَتْ كَمَا يَنْمُو الدُّودُ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ عَاهَدَ اللَّهَ لَئِنْ آتَانَا مِنْ فَضْلِهِ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ.
١٠٤٠٧ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ ثنا شَبَابَةُ ثنا وَرْقَاءُ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ عَاهَدَ اللَّهَ لَئِنْ آتَانَا مِنْ فَضْلِهِ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ رَجُلانِ خَرَجَا عَلَى مَلاءٍ قُعُودٍ، قَالا: وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ رَزَقَنَا اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ، فَلَمَّا رَزَقَهُمُ اللَّهُ بَخِلُوا بِهِ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: فَلَمَّا آتَاهُمْ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ بَخِلُوا بِهِ وَتَوَلَّوْا وَهُمْ معرضون
١٠٤٠٨ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ ثنا مُعَانُ بْنُ رِفَاعَةَ السَّلامِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْهِلالِيِّ، أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ الْبَاهِلِيُّ عَنْ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ حَاطِبٍ: أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- ادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِي مَالا، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْهُ مَالا اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْ ثَعْلَبَةَ مَالا، قَالَ: فَاتَّخَذَ غَنَمًا فَنَمَتْ كَمَا يَنْمُو الدُّودُ فَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَدِينَةُ، فَتَنَحَّى عَنِ الْمَنْزِلِ فَنَزَلَ وَادِيًا مِنْ أَوْدِيَتِهَا حَتَّى جَعَلَ يُصَلِّي الظُّهْرَ وَالْعَصْرَ فِي الْجَمَاعَةِ وَيَتْرُكُ مَا سِوَاهُمَا، ثُمَّ نَمَتْ فَكَثُرَتْ حَتَّى تَرَكَ الصَّلَوَاتِ إِلا الْجُمُعَةَ، وَهِيَ تَنْمُو كَمَا يَنْمُو الدُّودُ حَتَّى تَرَكَ الْجُمُعَةَ، وَطَفِقَ يُتَلَقَّى الرُّكْبَانِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ يَسْأَلُهُمْ عَنِ الأَخْبَارِ، فَسَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- عَنْهُ فَقَالَ:
