nor Abu Bakr, nor 'Umar, and I shall accept it from you!" So he did not accept it, and Tha'labah perished during the Caliphate of 'Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them all.
His saying, the Exalted: "So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts until the day they will meet Him."
10409 - 'Abdullah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, [who said] Husayn ibn 'Ali narrated to us, [who said] 'Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, from Asbat, from al-Suddi: "So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts until the day they will meet Him, because they broke their promise to Allah that they had made." Thus he was called a hypocrite, not due to denying Allah and His Messenger, nor doubting them, nor doubting anything that they brought, but rather due to his breaking of the promise and his lying.
His saying, the Exalted: "Because they broke their promise to Allah that they had made."
10500 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-'Awfi reported to us in what he wrote to me, [who said] my father narrated to us, [who said] my uncle narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah: 'If He gives us of His bounty, we will surely spend in charity and be among the righteous.'" This is because a man from the Ansar, who was called Tha'labah ibn Abi Hatib, came to a gathering and called them to witness, saying: "If Allah gives me of His bounty, I will give every rightful owner his due, I will give charity, and I will maintain ties of kinship." Allah tested him, and they continued in what they were lying about. So He gave him of His bounty, and he broke the promise he made to Allah. Therefore, he angered Allah by breaking what he had promised Him, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, narrated his affair in the Qur'an.
10501 - My father narrated to us, [who said] Abu Hudhayfah narrated to us, [who said] Shibl narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts until the day they will meet Him, because they broke their promise to Allah that they had made," when they said: "We will surely spend in charity," but they did not do so.
His saying, the Exalted: "Do they not know that Allah knows their secret and their private conversation?"
10502 - Abu Sa'd al-Ashajj narrated to us, [who said] Hani ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak regarding "He knows the secret," he said: He knows what is even more hidden than the secret, [even] that which he has not yet done, [but] which he will [eventually] do.
