His saying, the Exalted: "Those who criticize the voluntary givers."
10503 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, [who said] Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, [who said] Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Those who criticize the voluntary givers (from among the believers) in their charities," meaning: they find fault with the voluntary givers in their charities.
10504 - My father narrated to us, [who said] 'Isa ibn Yunus al-Ramli narrated to us, [who said] Mu'ammal narrated to us, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Thabit, from Anas or someone else: That the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, called people to [give] charity, so 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf came with four thousand [dirhams] and said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is charity." Some of the people criticized him and said: "'Abd al-Rahman did not come with this except out of showing off (riya')." And Abu 'Aqil came with a sa' (a measure) of dates, and some of the people said: "Surely Allah has no need of Abu 'Aqil's sa'." Then [the verse] was revealed: "Those who criticize the voluntary givers from among the believers in their charities," up to His saying: "Allah will not forgive them."
His saying, the Exalted: "From among the believers in their charities."
10505 - Ahmad ibn Sinan al-Wasiti narrated to us, [who said] Abu Yazid al-Harawi narrated to us, [who said] Shu'bah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, he said: I heard Abu Wa'il, from Abu Mas'ud, who said: We used to perform manual labor in the pre-Islamic period (Jahiliyyah), so [one of us] would come with half a sa' or a sa', and a man would give something abundant. They would say: "Indeed, Allah is rich beyond need of this, and this [person] is a hypocrite (mura'i)." Then [the verse] was revealed: "Those who criticize the voluntary givers from among the believers in their charities, and those who find nothing [to give] but their effort."
10506 - My father narrated to us, [who said] Abu Salih narrated to us, [who said] Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Those who criticize the voluntary givers from among the believers in their charities," he said: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf brought forty uqiyyah (ounces) of gold to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and a man from the Ansar brought a sa' of food. Some of the hypocrites said: "By Allah, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf did not come with what he brought except out of showing off (riya')." And they said: "Surely Allah and His Messenger are rich beyond need of this sa'."
10507 - My father narrated to us, [who said] Muhammad ibn 'Isa ibn al-Tabba' narrated to us, [who said] Hajjaj ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Mujahid, he said: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf had eight thousand dinars, so he came with four thousand dinars as charity. He said: And a man from the Ansar brought a sa' of dates, [having] worked for it all his night, and when
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ
١٠٥٠٣ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ ثنا أَبُو الْجُمَاهِرِ ثنا سَعِيدٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَوْلُهُ: الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ (مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ) فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ أَيْ: يَطْعَنُونَ عَلَى الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ.
١٠٥٠٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ الرَّمْلِيُّ ثنا مُؤَمَّلٌ عَنْ حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- دَعَا النَّاسَ بِصَدَقَةٍ فَجَاءَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ بِأَرْبَعَةِ آلافٍ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، هَذِهِ صَدَقَةٌ فَلَمَزَهُ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ: مَا جَاءَ بِهَذِهِ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ إِلا رِيَاءً، وَجَاءَ أَبُو عَقِيلٍ بِصَاعٍ مِنْ تَمْرٍ فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ: مَا كَانَ اللَّهُ أَغْنَى عَنْ صَاعِ أَبِي عَقِيلٍ فَنَزَلَتْ الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: فَلَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ
١٠٥٠٥ - حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْهَرَوِيُّ ثنا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا وَائِلٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: كُنَّا نُحَامِلُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَجَاءَ بِنِصْفِ صَاعٍ أَوْ بِصَاعٍ وَجَادَ رَجُلٌ بِشَيْءٍ كَثِيرٍ فَقَالُوا: إِنَّ اللَّهَ لِغَنِيُّ عَنْ هَذَا وَهَذَا مُرَائِي فَنَزَلَتْ الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لا يَجِدُونَ إِلا جُهْدَهُمْ
١٠٥٠٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا أَبُو صَالِحٍ ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ قَالَ:
جَاءَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ بِأَرْبَعِينَ أُوقِيَّةً مِنْ ذَهَبَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ- صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ- وَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ بِصَاعٍ مِنْ طَعَامٍ فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ: وَاللَّهِ مَا جَاءَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ مَا جَاءَ بِهِ إِلا رِيَاءً، وَقَالُوا: إِنْ كَانَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ لَغَنِيَّيْنِ عَنْ هَذَا الصَّاعِ.
١٠٥٠٧ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى بْنِ الطَّبَّاعِ ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ: كَانَ لِعَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ ثَمَانِيَةَ آلافِ دِينَارٍ فَجَاءَ بِأَرْبَعَةِ آلافِ دِينَارٍ صَدَقَةً، قَالَ: وَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ بِصَاعِ تَمْرٍ نَزَعَ عَلَيْهِ لَيْلَهُ كُلَّهُ فَلَمَّا
