of the people: 'Indeed, 'Abd al-Rahman has only brought what he has given out of pride and showing off. As for the owner of the sa' and the two sa', Allah and His Messenger are rich beyond need of a sa' or two.' Thus, they mocked them, and this verse was revealed regarding them: 'Those who criticize the voluntary givers from among the believers in their charities' to the end of the verse.

10501 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, in what he wrote to me, [stating] Asbagh ibn al-Faraj informed us, who said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam saying regarding His saying: 'Those who criticize the voluntary givers from among the believers in their charities and those who find nothing to give but their effort': The Messenger of Allah commanded the Muslims to give charity, so 'Umar ibn al-Khattab said: 'There is ample wealth,' and he took half of it. He said: 'Ample.' He said: 'So I came carrying much wealth, and a man from the hypocrites said to him: 'Are you showing off, O 'Umar?' He said: 'Yes, I am showing off to Allah and His Messenger,' and he found nothing other than that, no. He said: 'And a man from the Ansar came who had nothing, so he found his own self [in a position to] haul ropes on his neck for two sa' that night. He left one sa' for his family and came with one sa' carrying it, so some of the hypocrites said to him: 'Allah and His Messenger are surely rich beyond need of your sa'.' That is His saying: 'Those who criticize the voluntary givers from among the believers in their charities.'

His saying the Exalted: 'And those who find nothing to give but their effort.'

10502 - My father narrated to us, [who said] Muhammad ibn al-'Ala' Abu Kurayb narrated to us, [who said] Zayd ibn Hubab narrated to us, [who said] Musa ibn 'Ubaydah informed us, [who said] Khalid ibn Yasar narrated to us, from Abu 'Aqil, from his father, that he spent the night hauling ropes on his back for two sa' of dates. He returned with one of them to his family so they could subsist upon it, and he came with the other to seek nearness through it to Allah. He brought it to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—informed him: 'Scatter it into the charity.' He said: 'So the hypocrites mocked him and said: 'How could this one be in need of seeking nearness to Allah with a sa' of dates!' So Allah the Exalted revealed: 'Those who criticize the voluntary givers from among the believers in their charities and those who find nothing to give but their effort' until the end of the two verses.

10503 - Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tehrani narrated to us, [who said] Hafs ibn 'Umar informed us, [who said] al-Hakam ibn Aban informed us, from 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: 'And those who find nothing to give but their effort,' he said: He is Rifa'ah ibn Sa'd.
